Now before I start, I know this has been tried before, and every time
the opportunity has arisen, the furs involved have backed down.
I have been offered the opportunity to speak on live TV this Friday
about furry and how it affects me and my life. One of the things I have
made clear from the start is that I can only speak for my own beliefs.
And I will say this on TV. The show will air in the UK only. It is a
live interactive show called Frontal, and will air 11:35pm on Channel 4.
In the past, any TV coverage of furry has been bad and reflected poorly
on the community as a whole. I want to change that. It's about time one
of us stood up and showed ppl that fuury is not all fursuits and animal
sex.
What they are most interested in discussing is my furry spirtuality and
the story of how I discovered myself, and of my recent paw-fastening to
Louvé. I am quite happy to talk about these things, maybe even about the
furry culture as a whole, ie the art, the music. But I have made it
clear, and will say on TV that when it comes to furry beliefs, every
furry is an individual, and I can only speak for my own.
Now I know that some of you will be dreading this, and may try to talk
me out of it. So why am I making this post? If I'm going to go ahead and
take a risk that others have turned down, and that many of you may try
and talk me out of, why am I telling you?
This is why: because I want you to know that despite a bad history, we
can use TV to get a message acroos. A message to others out there who
are going through the loneliness many of us have known throughout our
lives. A loneliness that can be alliviated by letting them know they are
not alone, that there is a world full of, ppl like us ready to welcomes
them. And if just one person sees that show and finds the community as a
result, and puts an end to that loneliness, then it will be worth it.
Let's not exclude them because they don't have internet access, or if
they do, didn't know hat we are here.
And I want to hear from anyfur out there who feels that there is
anything that has to be said while we have this opportunity. This
program is live, it cannot be edited, and my words cannot be taken out
of context. The questions will be vetted by myself before it goes on
air, and the topics to be discussed already agreed.
I know there is always a chance that a malicious journalist may try to
lead the questioning down paths I am not willing to go, but for the
reasons I have given above, i am willing to take that risk.
Let's stop hiding. lets tell ppl we are here, not just on the internet,
but all over the world, and we are part of the world we live in. I will
do this becasue I feel it should be done. No one else will be mentioned
besides a small group of ppl who have agrred to let me talk about them
as they relate to my life within furry.

Cool. Give 'em what for.
I remember woofing some time ago on the group, the question about
morning shows. I pondered about throwing myself to the "wolves" by being
a morning show producer with a fursuit...and letting the team get all
over about the furry stuff.
There was some mixed review on the post. Many said I was going to be
"exploited" and all that. I felt like I was making a funny bit and
getting more airtime? I dunno if I would ever do such a thing unless it
was done in a funny matter.
> In the past, any TV coverage of furry has been bad and reflected poorly

Broad statement. I'm pretty mixed on the "furry coverage". I think the
reports I have seen/heard from outside America seem a bit more "out
there" but most of the stuff inside the country is hair-brained cheesy
journalism. Not really making furries out to be bad, but not being very
well put together "nuggets" of "furry adventures".
My fave thus far (personal because pics of myself in fursuit made it
into the story..) is the Fox news story on some of the Florida furries.
It was a pretty long piece, but those in the piece have mixed feelings.
One "cat" even stated on camera "If I could be (the animal) I would."
When I showed that footage to my brother he said "That guy's NUTS" Ahhh,
if only he knew. *snicker*
It's about time one

Hell! Calling all media! Front and center over here at the sheepdog's
place! I'm woofing! Get those tapes rolling. This time I'll mention I
need a radio gig and maybe someone will hire me because of it. *snicker*

I have thought about this. Do we need the promotion? Should we let the
net do what it has done for so many? I have yet to hear anyfur state
that one of the news reports on furries brought them to the furry world.
I'd be interested to hear if any have!

I'm not very knowledgable about TV in the UK, but if the children's
cartoons over there are anything like they are here, then most of the
children (and undoubtedly many adults as well) are already being
bombarded with furry material on a daily basis. When I used to
explain furry artwork to non-furs, I would make references to Bugs
Bunny and Disney cartoons. The point is, if you get asked about the
"questionable" artwork (which seems almost certain at this point),
make sure you let them know that the mainstream society is already
familiar with furry art, and that much of it is family-oriented.
As for fursuiters, you could point out that nearly every popular
amusement park has performers in fursuits interacting with the crowd.
It's not freakish, just good clean fun for those involved.
I know you're trying to avoid these questions, but these are some
good ways to help stand your ground if they do come up.
> Let's stop hiding. lets tell ppl we are here, not just on the internet,
> but all over the world, and we are part of the world we live in.
Umm... I'm not too sure about this. Granted, this is normal enough to
us, and there really is nothing wrong with the kinds of things we do,
but the vast majority of society would still see us as weirdos.
I can't speak for all furs, but I personally would have a problem with
seeing other furs publicly getting laughed at and pushed around because
of their interests (not to mention possibly receiving that treatment
myself). And if you don't think that would happen, consider this:
Have you ever seen how some people are treated simply for being
Star Trek fans? (I'm also a part of this crowd, and to say the least,
we aren't exactly held in the highest regard)
Chances are that we lifestylers would probably have things even
worse.
My advice: take it slow, and don't expect too much from a market
that (from what I've read) is apparently more concerned with making
fun of us than with promoting acceptance. Otherwise, I wish you the
best of luck with your endeavors.
I apologize if I've upset anyfur with this last part, but I felt it
important
to voice my concerns.

Well, you may want to show some pics of your wedding.

Secondly, you may want to mention that furs come from all
walks of life. Students, artists, writers, poets, rich, poor.
Heck we even have some NASA types in the ranks :)
good luck Chikki! I am certain you will make us all proud!

I wish you the best of luck with this and hope you work in some pictures of
your
paw-fasting - I think that would make for a very interesting show, especially
if they got a picture of the wedding cake couple Smrgol made....certainly the
story of how you found furry and in turn found Louve' would be a very uplifting
story, I believe.

*whinces* Chik'ki, I have to play advocate on this one
if nothing else than to warn you about the media. They
love twisting words especially when it comes to odd
subjects such as our little fandom. Media here in the
states are paid to crate sensationalizm. Unfortunately
at the expense of individuals. Sensationalizm sells and
that's what they get paid to do.
My experiance comes with an alternative weekly
newspaper in L.A. called the New Times and a reporter
who guised himself as pro-furry, trying to shed a good
light on furrydom. He asked me if he could reprint one
of my posts to a.l.f. (I'm sending you a copy of his letter
via e-mail) When the article did come out, he ripped us
to shreds. I'm glad that he didn't reprint my post.
As a suggestion, be armed with a lot of positive facts
when you go in and stick to the point.
Best of luck Chik'ki !

This is _so_ wrong. Chik'ki, you've demonstrated in the past an
amazing ability to totally fail to predict the consequences of your
actions. Now in a flurry of being the "big man of furry" you're
going to commit another Loaded. You clearly have no idea of what
these people are like. I know someone who owns a production company
that regularly produces documentaries for the BBC and independants.
He basically told me _never_ to appear on one of these shows.
Frontal is _not_ the format of show we need to tell people about
furry. The only way you will get away with this is if either
the researcher or the interviewer haven't being doing their jobs
properly.
David Cooke.
Orange-"Woah... There's gotta be a story behind all of that."
Blue-"Care to tell it?"
All i can say is "be careful, be very careful". I've done some TV
stuff in the past - always "offline" rather than live, and always
with a clause in the contract giving me some control over the cuts
and editing. I've also seen live TV being done.
Live TV is, believe me, seriously worrying - i certainly wouldn't
do it.
A "good" interviewer will almost certainly bowl you a couple of
real jaw-dropper questions, which will leave you floundering for
an answer. And because you want to to avoid looking like a slack-
jawed, drooling moron you end up saying the first thing that
comes into your head.
Then they've got you. And, like a terrier with a rat, once they
get you on the run, you're lost...

Either way I'm sure everyone who can watch it will and there'll no

I think it was more along the lines of full-frontal judging by the trailers
to the first program last week. Here's the synopsis from www.channel4.com:
Lisa Rogers and Natasha Bell host this interactive late-night
entertainment show live from the Channel 4 building,
alongside music producer Charlie Rapino and presenters
James Hyman and Tim Gould. Exploring the parts of popular
culture that other programmes are too scared to reach,
Frontal brings you cutting-edge music that has escaped the
play lists, as well as videos and film clips that have
previously been refused airtime, plus unique guests and
features.
To give you an idea of how it fits into the C4 Friday night line-up:
22:30 EUROTRASH
23:05 BIG BROTHER
23:40 FRONTAL
00:40 EDINBURGH OR BUST
01:10 SMART HEARTS
01:45 EUROTIKA!: THE POPE OF PERVERSION
02:15 EUROTIKA!: FRUSTRATION

I have placed some strict limitations on this interview.
First of all, and I must stress this, nobody will be mentioned unless I
already have their permission to do so.
All questions will be vetted by me,,and the interview will only take place
on the condition that there is a signed agreement by the programmers that
those questions are the only ones asked.
The Associate Producer has given me his home contact number, which I have
rung to speak to him this evening. Would he give me that info if he really
meant to screw me?
The subjects agreed are as follows: how long I've been open about furry, how
I discovered the community, how finding the community changed my life for
the better, the effect my trip to Sumatra had on me, my wedding.
All this given, the moment I smell something I don't like, I am out of there
long before the program goes on air. I would like to take this opportunity,
but I am not so stupid as to leave myself open for such attacks as have
happened in the past involving furry and the media.
I agree with Dave that the show is not the most ideal forum, but if they are
willing to give me a fair shot, I will take it. If at any point, I feel that
I am being taken for a ride, I am out of there.
I am fairly confident that this will work, but I am no less cautious for my
confidence.
