I'll take a guess and say it's because they get their share of phone
calls from nut cases. Better to give them the necessary info in a
recording than listen to their incessant bullshit.

I have called 911 a few times when fights would break out outside bars at closing times. I don't like seeing a lot of wild thoughtless violence. I can pull away from it, yes - and sometimes I do. But if I see I can do something to help someone I have done so. Anyway, the 911 calls, it seems to me their purpose is to actually get the caller more wound up with their overly calm 'just the facts, "Ma'am' approach. Like when you tell them a bunch of guys have one guy down and are kicking his face to pulp they will ask, "Are there any weapons?", to which I reply, "Yeah, fists and boots." Then, "Are there any weapons, Sir?", followed by, "How many people are there?", and other questions that seem rather needless. I rarely call the cops for any reason. But I can't say I'm batting a thousand because I have called them before.

A guy in my building who lives on my floor was locked out of the building the other night. I let him in. But he didn't have a key to get into his place. He wanted to use my phone. I let him. We have a guy in the building who is a 'key holder' and will let people in when they need it. But he either wasn't home or wasn't in the mood. Whatever, the guy who was locked out used my phone to call 911 and ask them to send a cop to let him into his apartment. I could hear the cop on the other end. He was actually trying to be polite but the guy who was locked out would't let him speak. He found some way in. I don't know if the cops showed up or not, but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.

I was actually agreeing with some shit from your end. I read your re-writes, which I have to admit I could not tell if they were better than my versions, but I sort of assumed they were because you are "The Critic", and who am I to challenge that? But then as I read along I found myself saying, "Wait a minute, I don't see anything special about his version." And it was not an ego thing, it was work reading your version and overworking my eyes to look up every so many words at my own version to see how yours compared - it was hard work - and as I went through it I just sort of naturally assumed "The Critic's" version had to be better than mine. Then I read your lines vs mine and thought some of mine were better. First of all, let me make it clear, I don't think my 'piece' was worth editing in the first place, just in case you think I love my own stuff, which most of the time I don't.

But then just as I swung from believing my version was best to believing yours was better, then back again with a few lines, actually saying out loud at one point, "How can this guy think this sentence is better than mine?", and then finally at the end coming to your final words where you admitted, "Oh, fuck it, I like your version better - oh man, that was a delight, almost making all the work beforehand worthwhile.

Being an editor is one thing, but I ain't no motha fucking proof reader, that's for sure.
