I#ve been playing guitar for 10 years now. as kid I always played air
guitar as a leftie. then I learned basics as righty.
now 10 years later I still lack any skill and never feel really comfortable.
so I'd like to change now.
who else did so after years? I really fear the next months (i can't play
anything as leftie)
but I'm quite sure it will improve quickly (but how quick?)
can anyone provide information about his own experiences in a similar matter
main question:
how long did it take to get to the same level?
(for the moment the only thing that keeps me going is the thought that
at some point something really cool will happen. I will be able to play
any guitar … i'll probably even be able to play them "wrong" … like
leftyguitar with right-hand and viceversa … but please give me some
other hope)
thx for any help,
Daniel
p.s. feel free to write directly to me :)

Hi,
Left handed playing righty here myself. I teach guitar for a living,
I can also understand why you might want to try and learn on a left
handed instrument as I myself tried this 2 years ago after playing for
25+ years on right handed instruments. Actually, the instruments
require both hands, so it's kind of funny to call one left handed and
the other right handed.
I'm guessing the pick feels awkward in your right hand. That's how it
has always been for me. I can pick way better with my left hand. I
don't think that is ever going to change.
But for me, when I tried playing on left handed guitars, my right hand
weakness was even more severe trying to use it on the frets. And I
really worked at it. It just feels awful to me to use my right hand on
the frets.
I guess for air guitar I play righty anyway. I'm not sure that's such
a valid test, but I've heard it mentioned. The real test, and the only
test, IMHO is which way can you play better. For me, after much
searching and experimenting, it's on right handed guitars.
That might not be the case for you though. So good luck with your
experiment. From what I've heard it can take a couple of years to get
up to where you are playing righty.
Good luck,
Steve
