Edmonton Police constable Douglas Kurtis Brown crashes his car after running
a red light and likely speeding and is charged with impaired driving. He
injured five people, one seriously (burns).
Now they admit they found marijuana in his car. They also found a properly
stored 12 gauge shotgun in his trunk.
Why was he not charged with possession of marijuana?
Why no gun charge?
Was his home searched for more evidence?
EPS is covering up again...they never learn...The Chief should be fired as
an example.
He was probably stoned and drunk. Now we'll never know if he was stoned and
if he had a grow op at home.
Why the need for a shotgun..protection from his dealers?

senior officers appoint a Barney Fife like imbecile that just graduated to
do the inital investigative work...that way a legal loophole you could drive
a semi through is left.. As I understand it that's what happened with the
Branders case where the kid was killed on the Yellowhead by the speeding
dark(no lights no siren) cop car.

A Non-restricted firearm is never considered stored in a car -a legal
impossibility. This is actually covered under transport regulations and for
Non-restricted firearms (shotguns) this simply means putting the gun in the
trunk.
Rules for Restricted and prohibited firearms are very different.

The shit heads are out in full force! Last time I checked cops are human
and one making a error or not living up to the standards of his oath doesn't
tarnish all. Take a look around at the priests,doctors ,politicians.....
whatever the group you'll always have some that deviate beyond what the
group stands for. Funny though when it involves a police member the loonie
toons line up in to fire whatever pot shots they can at the entire
organization.One individuals irresponsible behavior should not brand the
entire police force as incompetent.
I feel sorry for the victims and families involved as well as the
outstanding members of our police force who do protect and serve!
Place the blame to the responsible individual and lets not paint everyone of
that occupation with the same label..... if it would have been a electrician
or plumber would we cast those in that occupation in the same light? I think

The Toronto mounted cops had a funeral for a horse who was hit by some
stupid, drunken Hungarian immgrant in his car. Horses are important to
crowd control too.
You should have been here back in '93 when the Blue Jays won for the second
time. The city lit up like a blow torch, but violence was minimal.

I have never been so proud of my city. We were so cool. At least 100,000
people going nuts. Nothing like Vancouver in '94 or anywhere else.

Print version of the Journal can appear up to 24 hours after
the reported events happen. Could appear faster on the
paper's online version, but unless you are an online

Given that sentences in this country are normally served
concurrently, and this guy is getting the book thrown at
him, . . ..
Anyway, as PV pointed out in his follow-up, the police will
lay charges once they determine to whom the marijuana
belongs.

They would need a search warrant to do that. And to get
that, they would need to satisfy a judge that a search was
warranted.

As I pointed out above, sentences are served concurrently as
a general rule. Even if you could prove he was stoned at
the wheel, you aren't going to get more time if you charged
him with drug impaired driving in addition to the five
alcohol impaired driving chages he is already facing.
As to a grow op at his home, the police would need a search
warrant to conduct such a search, and they would have to
satisfy a judge there were reasonable and probable grounds
to conduct such a search.

Maybe he's into duck hunting.
Lots of people own non restricted firearms like shotguns and
hunting rifles, and own them for perfectly legitimate
reasons.

fire him, let him face the charges and get on with it. Since he helped
save the guy I think that changes the scenario. The marihuana could
have come from one of the other three passengers in the vehicle. The
post doesn't mention if it was in a plastic baggie or a film canister
but if it was they could dust for prints. He was driving a BMW 745i
which goes for 108k.

I just did a quick back of the envelope estimate using 30%
of gross income as maximum mortgage payment, and a person
making $60k per year could get a mortgage for a $500,000
home.
From a financial institution's point of view, a police
officer has a fairly stable income. Chances are, as long as
he does a good job and keeps his nose clean, he has a pretty
secure job. And if he is injured on the job and can no
longer earn a living, I figure he probably has pretty decent
long term disability insurance.
If his condo was purchased for, say, $350K, he'd easily ahve
some room available with a finance company to get a decent
car as well.
