If you've lived in Dallas for very long, you've probably seen "Keller's" the
drive-thru hamburger and beer joints.
It was founded by the Keller family in response to an overwhelming demand by
alcoholics, prior to the "open container laws" - which forbid a driver from
having an open container of alcohol in the car while driving. Back then, a
drunk redneck could just hand his beer to his skank and not get in trouble.

Next week, Texas' Republican legislature will begin hearing testimony in the
impeachment hearings for a daughter of the family, Sharon Keller (a Texas
state appellate judge).

The Republican was the appellate judge in a death penalty case. A couple of
years ago, she close her office early for the express purpose of blocking an
appeal by a death-row inmate.

The Republican *could* have just rubber-stamp denied the appeal - as she has
done in every other death-penalty case she's ever heard - but she was
concerned that her paper-thin arguments for denying this case would be
overturned later. So, to prevent any other judges from overturning her
decision - she didn't make one. She just closed her office, sent everyone
home, locked the door and took the rest of the evening off.

All this happened back in 2005, while her fellow Republicans were in control
of Texas' Dept. of Justice. But since then, voters have purged almost all
of the Republicans from that agency - so the case is finally able to be
brought to the legislature.
While some Republican legislators are expected to side with her, the vast
majority have already expressed their disgust at her blatant attempts to
undermine our system of justice.

Remember this the next time you want to stop at Keller's for a beer and a
burger.
A portion of every purchase goes to fund the political campaigns and
eventual legal defenses of corrupt Republicans.
