Dear Mr. Kantis:
It is indeed regrettable that you suffer so. The Journal of Refractive
Surgery cover has served as a Rorschach test on which you can project
your suffering. Be sure that it is not a slap in the face at you,
however.
The artwork on the covers of the Journal of Refractive Surgery stems
from the Miradas Project under the auspices of Dr. Jorge Alio in
Alicante, Spain. The artworks are from a juried show of works with the
theme of vision and sight held every two years, and many of the artists
are of substantial renown.
The artwork like the contents of the Journal itself covers the full
spectrum of patients vision experiences from thrilling elation to
depressing regret. The contents of the Journal report the spectacular
successes of laser vision correction and the complications and downsides
of the procedure as well.
Unfortunately, I see no such balance in the occasional emails that I
receive from you in your communications. Goodness, if the rest of
medicine indeed, the rest of human endeavor was fueled by the
destructive negativity you project, medical, scientific and human
progress would be slowed enormously.
As the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, I support a positive and
proactive approach to the difficulties and complications that accompany
LASIK specifically, vision correction surgery in general, and
ophthalmology in its attempt to relieve visual human suffering across
the board. While you foster despair while amplifying the suffering,
pain and regret shown by the artists in this particular painting,
thousands of researchers around the world are indeed making positive
progress in objectively and numerically decreasing the side effects and
complications of LASIK, while offering its life enhancing benefits to
millions of patients annually.
Read the Journal. You may appreciate the progress.
Sincerely,
George O. Waring, III, MD
