I was in Las Vegas yesterday and there was a horrific accident where a
car estimated to be traveling at 100mph plowed into a bus shelter at
Spring Mountain and Decatur at 06:22, killing 4 and injuring 8. The
driver is hospitalized and has been charged with DUI. (Several of the
injured were passengers in the car -- hopefully they will win Darwin
Awards.)
The driver won't face the death penalty because it wasn't technically
premeditated murder, but he should. Though I had a car with me, I had
taken the bus the night before, and it could have been me at any bus stop
in town who was obliterated by some drunk asshole.
His actions were so reckless that they amount to murder. Driving drunk
is very bad, but then if you do it you should at least try to drive as
carefully as possible, not drag race through a busy commercial district
at the break of dawn. Whether he intended to kill people is unknown, but
he did not care if he did, which is why he deserves to be executed.
