One could easily attribute this crackdown to Harry Reid's influence.
The Nevada casino cartel has long opposed online gambling (ooh,
excuuse me, "gaming") for the obvious reason that it siphons revenues
from physical casinos.

Having lived in Las Vegas for over a decade, I think gambling is
stupid. However, in a free country people are allowed to be stupid,
and if they want to spend their money on gambling, tobacco, crack, or
Obama t-shirts, this is their constitutional right.

Harry Reid's recent actions have been strange, however. First he
breaks with tradition and calls for Nevada to outlaw prostitution,
claiming it "tarnishes" the state's image. Then he turns around and
defends Nevada's gambling (ooh, excuuse me, "gaming") -- which has
already made the state the laughingstock of the world -- against
foreign online gambling companies.

Meanwhile, some Nevada casinos are working on their own online
gambling systems that would avoid federal regulation by limiting such
gambling to within state or even casino borders. Tourists would be
issued crackberry devices that would allow them to "game" from their
hotel rooms or by the poolside. The Las Vegas Review-Journal has been
reporting on this for several weeks now, so it is an interesting
coincidence that the Obama administration should choose this
particular time to crack down on rivals to Nevada's own online poker
operations.
