I have sometimes heard the word "mashtab", in conversation, as meaning
"scale" or "standard".

A Google search and an online foreign language dictionary search came up
with the word "mashtab" in Russian, but I am not sure what it is -- a title,
or name, or some sort of term. Is this word in Russian?

It is also possible that the word is actually MASHTAP, and the P to B
conversion is prevalent in Turkish words which were adopted into Arabic; but
Arabic and Turkish dictionaries online failed to find the word.

Does anyone know if this word is Russian, or if not, what language it is
from?

Thanks for any assistance,

Jay

from german about 300 years ago. originally it's a german word --
Masstab -- means "scale" in english, where "mass" means" measure" and
"stab" means "stick".
also:
