This Spanish phrase means "silver or lead" or "money or bullets".
Spanish word for "silver" is "la plata", not "plato". And "plato"
means "plate", "dish".
But very often version of this phrase with plato is used: plato o
plomo.

Is "plato" and alternative spelling of "plata" in Spanish? Or maybe
some local dialect spelling? Or is it modified from "plata" for this
phrase just to rhyme with "plomo"?
