Meaning of a word...

Does anyone know what the word "mehkashi" means? I don't know if that's the
correct spelling/pronunciation.

Very well said, Raj Sahib! I would have been hard put to respond to
Irfan's message (I think he is younger than me, I visited his homepage
once) with the same grace, good humour and equanimity that you have
employed.

Going by one of his postings on Urdu meter that I read long ago, Irfan has
a TREMENDOUS amount of knowledge to offer ALUP and I too wonder why he
does not contribute more often to everyone's pleasure and edification.

In the meantime I hope Raj Sahib will keep giving of his lifelong and
hard-earned fund of practical knowledge and of his deep love of Urdu,
which counts a million-fold more than any technically erudite but
heartless and mean-spirited (not to mention vanishingly small)
contribution.

In Pankaj Mishra's novel _The Romantics_ following translation from Iqbal
is provided, and I would be grateful if any one could point me to the
original in Urdu:

Love fled, Mind stung him like a snake; he could not
Force it to a vision's will;
He sought the orbits of the stars, yet could not
Travel his own thoughts' world;
Entangled in the labyrinth of his learning,
Lost count of good and ill;
Enchained the sunbeams, yet his hand no dawn
On life's dark night unfurled.

This was one of his poems in Zarb-e-Kaleem, in perhaps the second part entitled
Taaa'leem-o-Tarbiyat. The title of the poem is Zamana-e-Hazir Ka Insaan.

Aql Ko Ta'b-e-Furman-e-Nazar Ker Na Suka

Thats the entire poem. I think the title should have been translated Man of
Modern Age.

those who might be interested too:

friend is 1947, Kutub, Bombay - and would be grateful for

I think zarb-e-kaleem means the "staff of Moses" and not the
"sword of Moses"
