May I extend an invitation to contribute whatever we may know of this
type of sophisticated 'ashaar'? It could be really interesting to see
how many we are able to collect through the joint efforts of this forum
of lovers of Urdu poetry!
I should like to start the process with the following two examples:
Dagh Dehlavi:
koi naam-o-nishaaN poochhe to ay qaasid bataa denaa
taKHallus 'daaG' hai aur aashiqoN ke dil meN rahte haiN
Qamar Jalalwi:
taaroN kee bahaaroN meN bhee 'qamar' tum afsurdaa se rahte ho
phooloN ko to dekho kaanToN meN, hans hans ke guzaaraa karte haiN
I should like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the bygone
year and wish you all
A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR !!!
Regards
Tejjit Singh Kalsi

A beautiful idea, Kalsi Sahib! Here are some examples of 'punning on
takhallus' that I remember.
Maulaana Haali:
tapakta hai ash'aar-e-HAALI se haal
kaheen saada-dil mubtalaa ho gayaa!
Jigar Muraadabaadi:
kahaan jaati hai mil kar, o nigaah-e-naaz-e-be-parvah?
mire pehloo mein reh ja lazzat-e-dard-e-JIGAR ho kar!
Munshi Tilok Chand Mehroom:
aahen hain wuhi aur ashk-baari hai wuhi
abr-e-aalaam dil pe taari hai wuhi
murda hoon ke lutf-e-zeest se hoon MEHROOM
zinda hoon ke dil ki be-qaraari hai wuhi
Saahir Hoshiarpuri:
sun ke SAAHIR ki gahzal us ne kahaa
shaairi bhi 'saahiri' hone lagee!
Haaji Laq-laq (a humourous poet) --- for those who may not know the
meaning of this word, laq-laq = a stork (a bird with long legs and a
long neck and bill):
woh samajhte hain jaan-war is ko
haaye! LAQ-LAQ ko naam ne maara!
khair-andesh, Raj Kumar
Off-hand I can remember these two :
PaRa falak ko kabhi dil-jaloN se kaam nahiN
Jala ke Khaak na kardooN to Daagh naam nahiN
Umr saari to kati ishq-e-butaaN men Momin
AaKhri waqt men kya Khaak musalmaaN honge
Afzal

Ham jahaaN pohnche kaamyaab aae
Ishq par zor nahiN hai yeh voh aatish ghalib

Saghar saddiqui is my next choice :-))
Maikadaah badlaa hooaa saghar shikasta haal haiN
har haqeeqat ban gayee hai aaj afsane ki baat
Badal fiza maiN aap ki tasveer ban gae
Saya koi khayaal se guzraa to ro diye
rang-e-shafaq se aag shagoofoN maiN lag gayee
Saghar hamare haath se chhalka to ro diye
phoooloN ko aag lag gayee naghmaat jal gae
sooraj ki tez dhoop maiN lamhaat jal gae
Saghar lute lute haiN ,sitare bujhe bujhe
Shayad mere naseeb ke din raat jal gae
dukh dard ki soghaat hai duniya teri kiyaa hai
ashkoN bhari barsaat hai duniya teri kiyaa hai
Saghar maiN chhalakte haiN samavaat ke israaar
Saqi ki karaamaat hai ,duniya teri kiyaa hai
Jab voh daaNtoN maiN dabate haiN gulabi aanchal
kitne pur kaif nazaroN ko saza milti hai
mere pemane maiN dhal jata hai phooloN ka shabaab
mere saghar maiN baharoN ko saza milti hai
mere khayaal maiN abhi itna kafi kaafi hai

A sher of Hafiz Shirazi comes to mind:
zaahid ar rindii-yi Haafiz nakunad fahm, chi shud?
dev bug'rezad az aan qawm ki Qur'aan khwaanand.
So what if the zealot doesn't understand the ribaldry of Hafez?
The evil spirit flees from people who recite the Qur'aan.
A 'haafiz' of course is one who keeps the Qur'aan in his heart, i.e. has
memorized it, so one meaning is that the wicked, hypocritical zaahid, who on
this reading is equated to the dev (jinn), flees Hafez, because Hafez recites
the Quran (i.e. is truly religious, unlike the zaahid). But if you want to
give full credit to the "rindii" of Hafez, you can take "Hafez" simply as his
name, and Hafez the _rind_ is then the wicked (i.e. sufistic, not beholden to
the straitjacket of sharia) dev who flees the Quran-reciting zealot! On this
reading, the verse takes on a Kabir-like character.
Thanks to all those who gave commentary on Ghalib's verse. Another favourite
Joseph-theme verse is from the Hafez ghazal most popular with Western
commentators:
man az aan husn-i roz-afzuun ki yuusuf daasht daanistam
ki ishq az parda-yi 'ismat biruun aarad zulaykhaa-raa.
Of that beauty, ever-growing, Joseph had, I knew this much,
That love brought Zuleykha out from honour's veil.
How little is said in this verse, yet how much! This verse is deceptive. But
its magic must be savoured, not explained, so I leave it as it is.
1999 has said "Bismillah!" So Happy New Year to one and all!
Yours,
Fuzuli
"Allaahu jamiil, wa yuHibbu jamaal."
Here is one by Krishan Bihari Noor:
guzre jidhar jidhar se voh palte huae niqab
aek Noor ki lakeer thee jo khichte chale gaye
And this one from SaGHar KHayaami :
jab miray naam ko ik yaar ne Saagar likha
meri qismat ki KHaraabi meiN bhi daftar likha
tab chalaa mujh ko tal'faz ki KHaraabi kaa pata'h
jab farishtoN ne muqadar ko mukdar likha
Shyam
dohe rubaii nazmen, sabhi 'Tarz' the magar
aslaat shayarii ka khuda ban gayi ghazal
