khawatin-o-hazraat,

here is a nazm by a freedom fighter himself (and what a freedom-fighter)
his name is Ashfaqullah Khan "Ashfaq" he was a revolutionary and hanged
in 1930 for his involvment in the "Kakori Train Dacoity Incident".

Ashfaq, Ramprasad "Bismil" (another poet) and many others stopped a
train in Kakori near Lucknow , the train was taking revenues (money of
the people)collected to be deposited to the treasury. The
revolutionaries stopped and looted the train. but unfortunately they
were caught later and many of them hanged .
[ i must mention here that i had the oppurtunity to see the place where
this incident occured]

so here is by shahid of kakori Ashfaq...

watan hamara rahey shaadkaam aur aazad
hamara kya hai agar hum rahey, rahey naH rahey

SHORISH-E-JUNOON (last nazm of Ashfaqullah Khan)

bahaar aai hai shorish hai junoon-e-fitnaa samaaN ki
ilahi kHair rakhna tu merey zaibo-gHaribaaN ki

bhala jazbat-e-ulfat bhi kahiN mitaney sey miTatey haiN
abas haiN dhamkiyaaN dar-o-rassan ki aur zindaaN ki

woH gulshan jo kabhi aazaad tha gHuzarey zamaney meiN
maiN huN shakH-e-shikasta ya ussi ujaRhey gulistaaN ki

nahiN tum sey shikaayat humsafiraan-e-chaman mujh ko
meri taqdir hi meiN tha qafas aur qaid zindaaN ki

zameiN dushman zamaaN dushman, joo apney thay paraaye haiN
sunogey dastaaN kya tum, merey haal-e-parishaaN ki

yeH jhagRhey aur bakheRhey mate kar aapas meiN mil jaao
abas tafriq hai tum meiN yeH hindu aur musalmaaN ki

sabhi saaman-e-ishrat thay, mazey sey apni kaTati thi
watan key ishq ney humko hawa khilwai zindaaN ki

bahamd-illah chamak uTtha sitaara meri qismat ka
ki taklif-e-haqiqi ki ataa shah-e-shahidaaN ki

idhar kHauf-e-kHazaaN hai aashiyaaN ka gHam udhar dil ko
humey yaksaaN hai tafrih-e-chaman aur qaid zindaaN ki

this nazm was published in the monthly "Kirti" published from Amritsar
in 1930 and promptly banned by the British.

as i mentioned earlier Ram Prasad "Bismil" was also famous for his urdu
poetry, watch out next time.

you can read one more poem on aazadi( or rather mourn aazaadi) by Josh
Malihabadi which is the anam nazm for august 1997.

I do not have this ghazal and therefore cannot verify as to its
accuracy. However assuming that yasiiroN is the correct word we can
attempt the meaning.

yasiir or yaseer = motherless child
the other meanings of this word are: easy, soft

yasiiron is of course plural of yasiir and here it appears to imply
orphans. BTW the pronunciation of this word is ya-siir with a very short
ya, where a is almost not there, just as in the English word yea and
long siir as in the English word see.

If anyone has a different interpretation, please do comment.

Yogesh Sethi

Should read:
Poochne aate ho har roz aseeron ke mizaj
.......

Aseer means prisoner

Thank you for the confirmation of the word. We had two other postings
supporting it. BTW does any one know who wrote this ghazal? With the
word asiir, the sher makes sense. Here is another sher using the word
asiir:

bas ke huuN 'Ghalib' asiirii meiN bhii aatish zer-e-paa
muu - e - aatish-diida hai halqaa merii zanjiir kaa
-(Ghalib)
