aadaab 3arz-o-assalaamu 3alaykum maHfil-e-ALUP ke tamaam Haaziriin ko,

Urdu shi3r-o-shaa3irii meN ek baat hai jis se aap sab yaqiinan waaqif hoN ge, ya3nii apnii shaa3irii kii mahaarat zaahir karnaa, apne ahl-e-zabaan hone par Ghuruur dikhaanaa. bahut se shaa3ir aaye guzre aur un ke shaahkaaroN ko dekh kar ham bilaa shub-h kah sakte haiN kih unkaa aise kahne kaa Haqq zaruur thaa.

is laRii kaa mauzuu3 us se haT kar hai.

mihrbaanii kar ke is 3arabii jumle par Ghaur kiijiye:

اطلبوا العلم من المهد الى اللحد jise ko'ii 'Ali ko'ii Muhammad kaa irshaad kahtaa hai. xair,

is ko roman rasmu-lxatt meN yuuN tabdiil kiyaa jaa saktaa hai:

utlubu-l-3ilm min al-lahd illa-llaHd.

is qaul kaa yuuN aNgrezii meN tarjamah kiyaa jaa saktaa hai:

Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

On the other hand we have got the idea of an eternal student.

Since I have not contributed much to this Newsgroup, I would wish to beg you rather than request you, to share Urdu poetry which dwells on this matter.

Subsequently, I'd be most delighted if there is some literary evidence of Urdu masters admitting the need to learn. It is very easy to state at a certain point of one's lifetime that one is accomplished master, but if you can provide a quotation so that I may thank you for examples of mastery knowing no certain point to stop but to evolve, my purpose of having dared to trouble you on this Newsgroup shall be fulfilled.

Thank you for your attention,

gustaaxii mu3aaf, marrish

Janaab Marrish Saheb,

Modesty, with regard to their literary accomplishments, may not be
a strong point with most of our poets, but there are certain other
areas where they readily admit their shortcomings. For instance,
Ghalib says :

Leta hooN maktab-e-GHam-e-dil men sabaq hanooz,
Lekin yehi k(e) raft gaya aur bood tha

Zauq has humbly admitted man's limitations:

daanish tirii na kucch merii daanishwarii chale!

Please accept my thanks for your informative replies, both of you gentlemen.

I knew it would be a difficult query and I hope we all can expect more contributions in the days/weeks/months... to come.
