The word Aukaat in Urdu could mean the following.

a) aukaat (noun masculine) - times (plural of waqt) (Word origin -
Arabic)

b) aukaat (noun feminine) status/position (Word
origin - Arabic)

There are people who believe that the above (b) has purely Negative
Connotation, while I contend that the usage of Aukaat is per context.

I would like the Urdu experts to comment please.

Thanks
Kamesh

Kamesh saahib:

aap ne auqaat ke jo ma'anee b) ke tehet likhe haiN, vo vaa'qaee aksar
o baishtar tehqeer o tanz ke taur par barte jaate haiN. jaise is jumle
meN hai: "teree auqaat hee kyaa hai jo mere saamne is lehje meN baat
kare." Mir kaa laafaanee she'er hai:

chashm e dil khol us bhee 'aalam par
yaaN kee auqaat Khaab kee see hai!
[ye yaad rahe k Mir ne ye lafz aise istemaal kiyaa hai k is kee ka'yee
jehateN (dimensions) ban ga'yee hai)

ye lafz is ke ilaava bhee chand aur ma'aanee meN iste'maal hotaa hai,
jaise

auqaat = guzaare kee soorat, roTee-rozee. misaal dekhi'ye:

hai tavakkul par guzar apnee 'Ameer'
us ke dar kee bheek par auqaat hai

nasree misaal: "aamadanee kaa kuchh na poochhoo, bas guzar-auqaat ho
jaatee hai". isee tarah "tangee e auqaat" kaa matlab Ghurbat hai.

auqaat zindagee guzaarne ke ma'anee meN bhee musta'amal hai:

kaam jo karte haiN baihooda, 'Zafar', karte haiN
harza-gardee meN ham auqaat basar karte haiN
(note: ye she'er meraa naheeN, BS Zafar kaa hai :)

Khudaa ke lutf se kuchh kuchh tire karam se bhee
chalee hee jaatee hai auqaat meree yooN to mudaam
(Mus'ahafee)

kaTtee hai hijr e yaar meN auqaat is tarah
ko'yee kitaab yaa ko'yee aKhbaar dekh kar
(DaGh)

ummeed hai aap ke savaal kaa javaab mil gayaa ho gaa.

Zafar Saheb ne bahut tafseeli jawaab diya hai.

I would like to add just one point. The negative
connotation to which Kamesh Saheb has referred is
mostly colloquial.

Shukriyaa Zafar saheb.
However like Afzal saheb mentioned, I was looking for the connotation in the
colloqial sense.

Thanks
