You have posted two pieces from two differant ghazals, I guess the first one
is the one from the ghazal whose matlA is:
Na kisee kee Ankh ka nur hoo(n), na kisee kay dil ka qarAr hoon
Jo kisee kay kAm na A sakay, mai(n) wo aik musht ghubAr hoo(n)
I don't know this whole ghazal, but this one is also from Bahadur Shah Zafar. Ifanyone can complete it I will be very grateful. Also thanks to Aamir Nawaz for
posting Sahir's Tajmahal. You guys are also looking for some topics for dis-
cussion how about history of Urdu ghazal. A month ago I posted some information
about the history of urdu ghazal in response to someone's question about diff
erance between ghazal and nazm. I got quite a few responses, so I thought that
this will be a good topic for discussion. Tell me what you guys think and keep
posting fantastic pieces. This newsgroup is a breath of fresh air among all
those sleezy groups we find on the network.

Syed Naveed Razvi.

Except, you forgot my absoulte favourite sher from this
particular ghazal:
Umr-e-daraaz maang ke lAye the chaar din
do aarzoo mein kat gaye, do intezaar mein
cheers,
-A.D.
More from the same ghazal...
Some corrections may be required. There is at least
one more sher which I do not remember in its entirety (contains
"mai.n baDe virog kii huu.N sadaa"). The romanizing convention used
(see the other thread) is from the Itrans postscript package.
Specifically, .N encodes the "noon gunna" nasal ending, K for the
"khe", G for "Gain", the rest should be self-evident.
naa kisii kii aa.Nkh kaa nuur huu.N,
naa kisii ke dil kaa qaraar huu.N
jo kisii ke kaam naa aa sake,
mai.n vo ek musht-e-Gubaar huu.N

jo ujaD gayaa vo dayaar huu.N

koI aake shammaa jalaae kyuu.N,

Now, this is the third variation I have seen on this particular
a'shar. It sort of combines the earlier two I have seen/heard.
Namely,
pae fatihaa koii aaye kyu(n)
koii chaar phool chaDhaae kyu(n)
Zafar ashq koii bahaye kyu(n)
ki mei(n) bekasii kaa mazaar hoo(n)
The second version I have heard is the above with the second
line replaced with "koii aake shamm'a jalaae kyu(n)".
Does anyone know if there is a definiteve version?
-A.D.
Well, the first one above is the version used by Rafi in "Kohinoor",
where the "takhallus" of the shaayar had to be omitted (kind of like
the "fitnaa" for "ghalib" substitution in "ishq par zor nahin" lines
in the qawwali from barsaat ki raat). So I would think that this
version is the most suspect. The third one that you quote seems to
be closest to the version sung by Habib Wali Mohammed on his Melodies
collection. So perhaps that is the accurate one. I have this ghazal
as part of a collection, so let me go check up on this. OTOH, the
divaan is probably the best source. btw, can any knowledgeable
netter provide a good synopsis of the zauq-zafar controversy, and
what is currently believed with respect to authorship?
