A ghazal by Qamar Jalalwi

Parveen in her inimitable style. She sings only a few ashaar of this ghazal
though. The complete ghazal was sent in by one of the subscribers of
Mehfil-e- Gazal.
kabhii kahaa na kisii se tere fasaane ko
na jaane kaise Khabar ho ga_ii zamaane ko
chaman me.n chho.Datii nahii.n kisii suurat [something wrong with this line!]
tarah tarah se banaataa huu.N aashiyaane ko
duaa bahaar kii maa.Ngii to itane phuul khile
kahii.n jagah na milii mere aashiyaane ko
chaman me.n jaanaa to sayyaad dekh-bhaal kar jaanaa
akelaa chho.D kar aayaa huu.N aashiyaane ko
merii lahad pe pata.ngo.n kaa Khuu.N hotaa hai
huzuur shammaa na laayaa kare.n jalaane ko
sunaa hai Gair kii mahafil me.n tum na jaaoge
kaho to aaj sajaa luu.N Gariib-Khaane ko
dabaa ke qabr me.n sab chal diye duaa na salaam

By a strange coincidence, this is one of the ghazals sung by the Sabri
brothers in qawwaal style. (Greatest hits volume 2). The Sabris use
manaanaa instead of bulaana. In a parallel thread this style has been
taking some hard knocks. Like Ali Minai Sahib, I generally find the
music more valuable than the lyrics. But I have been quite puzzled by
their choice of lyrics, since I was never able to relate the shers to
anything I had ever read. When I first learned (some time ago) that
Amir Khusro was well represented in their repertoire, I thought I may be
missing something, and that the Sabri brothers, NFAK and others may be
using some other well-known sources that I was unfamiliar with.
In the Nusrat FAK ghazal being discussed in the other thread, there is a
point during the performance when NFAK recites the sher cited by Ali
Minai Sahib:
ye uRI uRI si rangat, ye khulE khulE se gEsU:
teri subh' keh rahI haE terI rAt kA fasAnA.
I'm glad I know the source of that sher at least!
They (Sabris and NFAK) do provide excellent music to exercise by. I
find that they get my energy level up. My favorite is "Chhaap tilak sab
chheeni mose naina mialaike". The text for several Khusro compositions

This is well worth visiting. Khusro's work is there in Urdu script,
with roman transliteration and extremely useful transation.

pur-lutf post parh kar jee chaaha ke aaj do-aek baaten ALUP ke baare mein hi

theen aur saqeel-o-sanjeeda baihs-mubaahise bahut kam hote the. aaj kal
mu'aamila bilkul ulat ho gayaa hai; baihs-mubaahise khoob zor-shor se ho rahe
hain aur halka-phulka mawaad shaaz-o-naadar hi dekhne ko milta hai. haalaan-ke
yeh dono pehloo apni apni jagah aham hain, phir bhi kuchh m'otdil sa tanaasub
rahe to sabhi ke liye achhchha hoga --- kiyoonke
GUL'HAA-E-RANG-RANG SE HAI ZEENAT-E-CHAMAN.
agar is lihaaz se dekha jaaye to aap ki is post ne ALUP ki fazaa ko phir se
taaza-dam kar diya hai. ba-raah-e-karam, aisi navaazishen mutwaatar karte
rahiye ga!
Now, a few comments on the ghazal you posted.

is she'r ka pehla misra' sar-aa-sar ghalat hai. magar saheeh misra' kya hai,
is baat ka mujhe ilm naheen hai. haan, doosra misra' kuchh aisa dil-pazeer
hai ke poora she'r nihaayat dilchasp hona chaahiye. dekhiye, shaa'id koi aur
dost is kami ko poora kar sake!

yahaan bhi pehla misra' khaarij-az-baihr hai. 'dekh-bhaal' ki bajaaye agar

possibilities too!

This is perhaps the best she'r of this ghazal. "zaraa si der mein" ka jawaab
naheen!

I also prefer the original one --- for several reasons. In any case, the first
misra' of the second version is again 'out of meter'; it could well be
ab aage tum pe bhi mumkin hai koi baat aaye.
Still the original is much better.

I heard this qawwali a long time ago in Delhi; the singer was Habib Painter.
I clearly remember that he sang the original she'r which, I think, makes a
lot more sense than does the newer version. aap dekhiye ke agar koi aashiq
apni mehbooba ko manaane ke liye jaaye to yeh aek semi-private sa amal hai,
jis mein rusvaai ka ziyaada imkaan naheen hai --- raat chaahe andheri ho ya
chandani. is ke bar-aks, agar koi use bulaane ke liye jaaye (dating ke liye
ya idhar-udhar chaihl-qadami ke liye) aur raat chandani ho to rusvaai ka
imkaan kaheen ziyaada hai. is liye, mujhe to original version ziyaada
achhchhi lagti hai.
aakhir mein, aek baar phir aap ka shukriya, Nita ji, ke aap ki post ne ALUP
ki fazaa ko az-sar-e-nau tazaa-dam aur pur-lutf banaa diya hai. kabhi Sanaa
Sahiba se bhi kahiye ke woh bhi kuchh likh bhejen to kya buraai hai? na
jaane, kaun si guphaa mein ja baithi hain! :-))

6. Tum jo neki aaj (the prolific namaaloom)
Incidentally, Chaap tilak has lyrics that I first heard in
Mughal-e-aazam (More panghat pe nandlaal chhed gayo re). It is really
amazing to hear "Kankari mohe maari, ghaghariya phod dari" sung by the
Sabris. IMHO, it puts Lata to shame.
I have never heard Chaap tilak sung by NFAK. After listening to more of
him, I decided to stick with the Sabris.

wonderfully sung version by Jafar Hussain Badayuni for the Qawalli series by
Music Today. He and the Warsi brothers did two cassettes each for that series.
Between those 4 cassettes are many Amir Khusrau and other traditional
compostions that make for superb listening. Much better than NFAK by a long
shot.

Mr. Jafri is considered by many to be India's greatest Urdu poet. He was
chosen in 1997 for India's highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award.

Khoon Ki Lakeer, Ek Khwab Aur, Pairahan-e-Sharar and Lahu Pukarta Hai. He
will read selections in both English and Urdu.
Ali Sardar Jafri has travelled from India to visit us and will be honored
by the Harvard Foundation for his contributions in literature to promote
mutual understanding between India and Pakistan. He will be the final
writer featured in the Voices of the Sub-continent literary series this
academic year.
This event represents a joint effort between the Harvard Foundation for
Intercultural and Race Relations, Department of Sanskrit and Indian
Studies, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the
Harvard University South Asian Association.

I am glad to note that ALUP is becoming more and more active these days. I
only wish that some of the old timers like Khursheed sahab and Yogesh Sethi
sahab would return and make it even livelier.
The current thread on qawaallis on ALUP as well as rec.music.indian.misc
(RMIM) reminds me of a tape I bought recently - Sur Bahar Khusro. It is a
compilation of songs and qawaallis by Amir Khusro by various artistes, mostly
from Pakistan. I shall post the details in a day or two. If someone else has
the album an wants to post a review, please feel free to do so.
I do agree with Nagesh sahab about preferring the Sabri brothers to NFAK. For
some reason, NFAK's vocal pyrotechnics put me off rather than enhacing the
pleasure of listening to him. Not always, but enough number of times for it to
matter to me.
Would it possible to compile a list of Amir Khusro geets and qawallis that
have been sung by Indian/Pakistani singers/qawaals? And whether recordings of
the same are available?

Khusro compositions sung by singers on the subcontinent.
Someone mentioned some time back in this thread about "Anhad Garje" which was
two videotapes of singers singing sufi poetry including compositions of Amir
Khusro . I finally was able to track down a copy here in the States. I am
hoping that if it works out, I might get a copy of it in my hands in a week or
two. Maybe that can start to kick off the list.
I do suppose, however, the most obvious place to start would be with the album
"The Genius of Amir Khusro" which had various singers from India sing his com
positions . These included Pandit Jasraj, Sudha Malhotra, Mukesh, Krishna Kalle
and Pushpa Pagdhare ( I think), and Shambu-Shankar Qawwal.
The music director was Begum Akhtar collaborator Murli Manohar Swarup and was
from HMV. Only problem is that I don't know if it is still availabe on
cassette. I have not seen it anywhere.
There was an incredibly lovely version of an Amir Khusro composition at the
beginning of Shyam Benegal's movie, "Junoon" sung in the qawalli style by
Javed Akhtar and party of Rampur. The videotape is readily available in here
in the States.
