Strictly speaking, there is no word that is originally an Urdu word.
Most of the words used in Urdu are originally Hindi or Persian words;
some are Arabic, a few Turkish, still fewer Portuguese, and so on.

The words 'dost', 'dosti' and 'dostaana' are very much Urdu words but
they are originally Persian.

Excuse me Philip but why is the series titled qawallis? Did NFAK sing
this? It is a nazm by Javed Akhtar and as far as I know, hasn't been
sung in any form - qawalli or otherwise.

I just thought you might want to know that the topic heading is
misleading.

This immortal she'r deserves to be included in the list of proverbial
verses that we discussed recently in the thread started by Ali Minai
sahib. It is by Nasir Kazmi. I wonder if someone could post the whole
ghazal.

Dear Nita, thanks for your remarks. Nusrat did in fact sing this nazm
of Akhtar's, along with a few other of his nazms (such as Afreen
Afreen and Shahar ke Dukaandaaro), on the Sangam album. I of course
would rather call them Indian pop, but Nusrat does give this stuff a
qawwali-like feeling, and in general his interpretations at times make
it hard to distinguish tradition from pop.

Best,
Philip
