I am looking to buy a copy of Diwan-e-Ghalib in Devnagiri script. Does
such a version exist? Where can I get it? Are there any other books
in Hindi on Ghalib's poetry?
Thanks.
Hema.

The more comprehensive edition is the one put out by the Ghalib
Institute of New Delhi. Then there is the one edited by Parkash Pandit.
Both are in Nagiri script and offer some help with meanings of
difficult Urdu words. There is also the Ali Sardar Jafri edition that
has Urdu and Nagri script on facing pages. The first two are more
readily avialable in Delhi, in the Urdu Bazaar, near Jama Masjid. The
following shop sends books by mail, at least within India.
Maktab Jamia Ltd.

Hope it helps.

The latest addition to the pantheon of books on Ghalib is a
coffee table style edition of Deewan-e-Ghalib by T.P.Issar.
The book contains the poems in Urdu and Devnagri script, in
Romanized Urdu and translations in English. The cost of the
book is steep (Rs.1100.00) but the print and paper quality
is great.
A fairly recent book is "Ghalib ba Ugr" an annotated version
of Deewan-e-Ghalib. However, the book has received mixed
reviews as far as the annotations are concerned.
Apart from the Prakash Pandit and Ali Sardar Jafri editions
already mentioned, there is a Deewan-e-Ghalib edited by Noor
Nabi Abbasi. Probably this is the one published by the Ghalib
Institute.
Hope this helps

Hi Hema,
The Ali Sardar Jafri edition is out of print and cannot be found in any
bookstore. However, the other two books (Prakash Pandit and Noor
Abbassi) can be bought online at www.indiaclub.com. They also have
Deewan-e-Ghalib in Urdu script apart from a host of other books on Urdu
poetry.
Another source for Urdu poetry books in the US is
www.indiabookhouse.com which has its store on Devon avenue in Chicago.
Most indian publishers and big bookstores have their websites or at
least e-mail addresses. They will be more than willing to send the
required books by air/sea mail. It is slightly more costly than buying
it directly from them in India but worth it if you have no plans on
going to India in the near future and are uncertain about the comings
and goings of relatives. :-)
Apart from that, the same books are way cheaper in India than they are
here in the US. The cheap Diamond publication booklets, for example,
can be pruchased for Rs. 25 - Rs. 40 in India whereas the same books
cost upwards of $5 here in the US. This is true for almost all books.
For those of you who may be interested, the Urdu-Hindi-English
dictionary by John Platts has recently been published by Urdu
Academy, Delhi and is now available easily. I am curious about
the price of that dictionary here in the US (if it is available).
Has someone bought it here?
