the meaning of fazaa or fizaa

Hi Alupers

For long i believed the word fizaa or fazaa to mean atmosphere or
environment. however i recently stumbled on its meaning in platts and
found that there is no such meaning.

request for clarification on this.

P فزا fizā, or fazā [for afzā, rt. & imperat. of afzūdan; Pārsī awazā;
rt. Zend śā with prep. aiwi = S. अभि+शा (शो, श्यति)], part. adj.
Increasing, augmenting, enhancing (used as last member of compounds,
e.g. jān-fazā, 'life-increasing').

A فضا faẓā (inf. n. of فضو 'to be wide or spacious,' &c.), s.f. Width,
spaciousness, openness, extensiveness (of ground, &c.); an open area,
a court, a yard; a spacious tract, a wide expanse of land, a plain
(syn. maidān).

fazaa (your second entry), often pronounced "fizaa" in essence is the
space around us. However, as we are all very sensitive, creative and
poetic beings, it is not the space itself that affects our mind and
senses but what the space contains! And that is air, fragrance, dew,
rain, flowers, birds....need I go on. Then this fazaa, in Urdu,
becomes 'maaHaul or samaaN" and in English "atmosphere or
environment".

narm fazaa kii karvaTen dil ko dukhaa kar rah ga'iiN
ThanDii havaa'eN bhii terii yaad dilaa ke rah ga'iiN

raat sunsaan thii, bojhal thiiN fazaa kii saaNseN...

It appears that "fazaa" is not all that common in Ghazal since this is
rather a "taNg-naay". However, the expanse of the nazm is able to
contain it:-)

This is what some of our friends said about the word in 1998. Long
before my time of course!

history repeats itself or better still

saif andaaze bayaan rang badal detaa hai
varnaa duniyaa me.n koee baat nayee baat nahee.n

baharhaal what i can glean is that fazaa is used in the arabic root
and in a figurative sense. is it never used literally. for example

mere ghar ke saamne ek fazaa (open area or maidaan) hai jahaa.n bhains
charte hai.n or something like that?

ko ham bhains hee kehte hai.n usake ling kee jaanch kiye baGair.
bhainsaa to aam taur par janglee hotaa hai. to kyaa paaltoo vaalee

husband/boyfriend ki maiN naheeN jaantaa, k mujhe aisi baatoN kaa 'ilm
naheeN hai, lekin "bhaiNs" kaa muzakkar (masculine) "bhaiNsaa" hi
hotaa hai. aap saRak chalte bhaiNsoN ko kyaa kah ke pukaate haiN (aur
kyoN!) is se koi bhaiNsaa bhaiNs meiN thoRe hi tabdeel ho jaataa
hai? :-)

dekhiye, aap kisi insaan ko "gadhaa" kaheNge to woh gadhaa to naheeN
na ban jaayegaa? warna Hindi film hero Dharmendra kitne hi villain-oN
ko sag banaa chuke hote!
