There is the very famous recitation of the couplets by a bearded
character in Rehman's party in Pyaasaa who recites

roodaade ghame ulfat unse hum kyaa kehte...hum pee bhee gaye chhalkaa
bhee gaye

it was part of the pyaasa/kaagaz ke phool cassette and I have loved it
all this while. recently I read somewhere that the man who recites it
in pyaasa was actually majaaz lakhnavi. majaaz died in 1955. pyaasaa
came in 1957. so what is the truth? does anyone know about this?

Ravi Sahib:

You will find a nice documentary on Majaz on YouTube. Search for
Majaz and Kahkashan. The segments on Majaz are part of a longer
series by Sardar Ali Jafri. Many ghazals from this series can be
found on a CD called Kahkashaan by Jagjit Singh. Other poets in the
series are Hasrat, Jigar, and Josh.

Firaq figures in that program too. I'm not a big fan of Jagjit
Singh's, but the presence of Ali Sardar Ja'fri amongst those
responsible for the Kahkashaan series was a welcome breath of fresh
air.

Ravi saahib,

You have already seen the Majaz postage stamp:

Compare that face with the following snippet from the scene from
Pyaasa that you allude to above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb554f9kEiw

hmmm...I have seen both. They are clearly different people. But some
blogs/websites have mentioned that he appeared in the film. which lead
me to wonder about the truth. given his history of being admitted into
mental health institutions - his looks could also have been
volatile !

But I take it you are confirming that it is not Majaaz :)

Well, it cannot be denied that there is a rather strong resemblance
between the person in the film and the "portrait" on the postage
stamp :-)

Ravi sahib,

Look at the clean shaven person and you will see the resemblance. The
nose clinched it for me! The 'bearded character' is perhaps Jigar.

Vijay saahib,

Here are a couple of photographs of Jigar Moradabadi's

Does the face of the individual reciting "kaam aaKhir jazba-e-
be.iKhtiyaar aa hi gaya" in Pyaasa (nose, beard and 'Topi' included!)
look the same as these photographs, to you, especially in the close
ups where the gentleman on screen says "miyaaN shaa'iri sirf
daulat.mandoN ki jaageer naheeN"?

-UVR.

PS: It's definitely possible that the voices reciting the poems are
those of Majaaz and Jigar.

It is a difficult call UVR sahib. But the clean shaven face, to my
eyes, looks like the slightly younger version of the stamp:-)

Vijay Saahib

The beard on the Jigar looks like a false one and Majaaz died in
December 1955 - Pyaasa released in 1957. Though it could have been in
the making for long, but it certainly does not look like them.

The voices could be theirs'

You are likely correct. But if were to pick one of the two for
resemblance, then it is the 'un-bearded' one.

Vijay
