Waqai aap ne sahi kaha hai. AMU ka khusoosi mahaul thoda khusoosi
zaroor hai, lekin hai to usi dharti ka, jis ke rang mein banaras ki
subah aur awadh ki shaamein rangi hain, lehaza in rangon mein Sham-e-
Misr aur Shab-e-Sheeraz to kahin fit nahin hongi :-) Ab ye Urdu adab
ke pas-manzar ka laa-shu'oori asar hai ya nahin .. ye to majaz sahab hi
janen :-))
Aur chalte chalte ek bar aur shukriya aap ka, urdustan par mulaqat hoti

The creator of Aligarh Tarana, Asrar-ul-Haq Majaz was born, in 1909, at
Radauli-a town few miles from Lucknow. He had his early education at
Lucknow and Aagra. He did his B.A. from Aligarh Muslim University.
Majaz was one of the founders of the Progressive Writers Movement. He
did believe in revolution, but he was by temperament a romantic person.
He never advertised revolution in his poems but sang sweet songs of
revolution that matched his personality.
His nazm awaara is considered one of the best urdu nazms.

Zafar Iqbal Sahib, many thanks for posting this excellent naz'm by
Majaz. So many know of this naz'm only by a couple of the stanzas from
the movie 'Thokar', as sung by Talat Mehmood.
In the same movie, Asha Bhonsle also sang a couple of stanzas. Whereas
Talat version is faithful to Majaz, Asha's is at variance. I don't (but
would like to) know whether Majaz himself had supplied this extension
or was another lyricist involved. Be as it may, I post below the two
supplementary stanzas:
mujhko qismat neN banaya, gandhle paanii ka kanval
Khaak meN mil mil gae sabh, aarzoo ke yeh mehal
kya Khabar thii yUN meri taqdiir jaaegii badal
ai gham-e-dil.......
roothne vaale kisii majboor se roothegaa kya
jis tarh qismat neN lootaa, yUN koii lootegaa kya
ai mere toote hooe dil, aur too tootegaa kya
ai gham-e-dil........

This stanza is very much reminiscent of Sahir's
'jalaa do ise phooNk daalo yeh dunya', from Pyasa. Sahir and Majaz were
contemporaries, both with a cetain 'inqlaabii' bend. In the movie
Pyasa, in the scene of college mushaairaa, where Guru Dutt
sings, 'hamneN to jab kaliiaaN mangiiN', there are a couple of other
shoraa, before him. One of those was Majaz himself.
