"Barriada" seems to refer more to the inhabitants or type of inhabitants to

The word "barriada" is commonly used in mainland Spain. Don't take my word for
it, look how many times it comes up in the Spanish national newspaper "El País"
(2,300,000 hits on a Google search):

The most important point being, of course, that you can check this kind of
question out by doing a bit of research on the Internet. Google and
WordReference.com are usually the best places to start.

shanty-town. At least that what our teacher says (and she comes from
Lima). Maybe the connotation is different in Spain?
