I'm struck by the comment "committed to the mission of reaching poor and
illiterate people worldwide with the Word of God".
If illiterate people in Chile or Mexico can't read Spanish, then why
give them Latin? I can only assume that the very sound of Latin must
mean something sacred to them. I feel that too, especially when it's
chanted.
A vast cathedral vault, sumptuously decorated and laid out with icons of
saints and martyrs; a choir in the stalls singing or chanting in Latin,
and a priest in the pulpit reciting from the Vulgate.
Yes, there's something quite splendid about that. It appeals to me too,
and I understand the words!
