Et insufflabitur in Tubam [prima vice],
& corruent exanimes qui [sunt] in coelis & qui [sunt] in terra,
praeter eos quos voluerit Deus.
Deinde insufflabitur in eam secunda [vice],
& ecce ipsi [qui erant mortui] surgentes aspicient
[expectantes quid futurum sit].<68>

Et coruscabit terra ex luce Domini sui,
& ponetur Liber,
& adducentur prophetae & martyres testes,
& judicabitur inter eos cum veritate,
& ipsi non tractabuntur inique.<69>

Et satisfiet omni animae pro eo quod operata fuerit;
& ipse [erit] scientissimus de eo quod fecerint.<70>

Et ducentur qui infideles fuerint in Gehennam per catervas,
donec, ubi pervenerint ad eam,
aperiantur portae ejus,
& dicent illis custodes illius:
. . Nonne venerunt ad vos legati ex vobis,
. . qui recitabant vobis signa Domini vestri,
. . & comminabantur vobis adventum diei hujus?

1. The verse numbers have been placed at the *ends* of the verses to
minimise disruption to the text layout.

2. In addition to the customary imposition of 'per cola et commata'
formatting, an attempt has been made to modernise the punctuation and to
apply Capitals in a less inconsistent manner than in the original. One
cannot, of course, hope by such measures to compensate for Sale's
criticism of Marracci's Latin as "adhering to the Arabic idiom too
literally to be easily understood", yet perhaps they offer some slight
mitigation.

3. From "catervas" (Ar. 'zumar') in vv. 71 & 73 is derived the tag (or,
less accurately, title) by which this Surah is known.

4. In the Arabic, the rhyming syllables which conclude each verse are
"-锟絥" in vv. 67-70, and "-锟絥" in vv. 71-75.

5. Although verse 68 above distinguishes only two insufflations, some
scholars believe the total number to be three, for an exposition of which
see Sale's Preliminary Discourse (e.g., by going to http://is.gd/3WxOy and
using Ctrl-F to locate the word "consternation").

6. The Angel of Insufflation is not named in the Qur'an, but Tradition
identifies him as "Isr锟絝锟絣" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israfel).

7. The "&" (Ar. 'wa') of "& aperientur portae ejus" in v.73 is said to
confer a circumstantial character on the clause, implying that the gates
have already been opened in anticipation of the arrival of the
inmates-to-be of Paradise, whereas the absence of a corresponding "&" in
verse 71 denies this putative honour to the arrivees at the Other Place.
(Ah, what a difference one ampersand can make!)

8. Marracci seems to have got his roots in a twist in verse 75 where he
translates the participle 'H锟絝f锟絥a' as if it were derived from the verb
'Hafiya' (root H-f-y), meaning to walk barefoot (whence the "nudatos
pedibus"), whereas it is in fact derived from the verb 'Haffa' (root
H-f-f), meaning to go around or to surround. Happily, George Sale parts
company with Marracci in this respect by his rendition: "And thou shalt
see the angels going in procession round the throne". (I am indebted to
