tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento
(hae tibi erunt artes), pacique imponere morem,
parcere subiectis et debellare superbos.'
(Aeneid 6)
I've carried these lines in my head since I was about 12; and imposed
them on all the history of the world I've since learnt.
Anchises to his son Aeneas, down in Hades where he's marshalling Rome's
future greatness, and explaining his modus operandi.
I see irony and myopic bigotry in them; and I can't help but suppose
that Vergil would have seen it too. They are the very archetype for the
rise and fall of all empires. And most especially the ones that went out
to preach Christianity.
We live in an age that has somehow matured to the extent that we can see
the value of biodiversity. I should think this view has been forced upon
us by seeing how former ages have deleted our planet. We see this
viewpoint more than previous generations; although even the Romans had
some sight of it, albeit a minor point in their Weltanschauung.
Will we change? The least I can say is that this viewpoint is very well
known today; and will arise in all planning and human enterprise.
