Luid Kabalen,
Question: What do Malou Apostol, the Pampanga Dragons, and Mimosa
Leisure Estate all have in common?
Answer: Jose Antonio U. Gonzales (JAG). Malou Apostol, a former beauty
queen from San Fernando, Pampanga, has JAG for a husband; the Pampanga
Dragons have JAG for an owner; and Mimosa Leisure Estate has JAG for
President.
Which is why Clark Development Corporation's recent move to take over
Mimosa Leisure Estate is indeed very dismaying from a certain and
limited point of view for Mike and myself because we consider Mimosa a
tool, if not a partner, in our efforts to get big-name backing for the
nationwide and worldwide popularization and publicization of Kapampangan
culture as exemplified by its Mimosa Queni and Pasko Queni programs.
Aside from this, Mimosa is also to be lauded for its efforts below.

Mimosa's GM for a day in its 'school of experience'
THIS year at summer time, Mimosa Leisure Estate sent feelers to
neighboring universities and schools in Angeles City to encourage
students interested in the hospitality industry to take a real close
look at this exciting field.
After a series of invitational familiarization tours, a number of Hotel
and Restaurant Management students signified serious intentions to
pursue a career in the hotel industry.
Inspired by this and moved by the community's response to Mimosa's youth
education program, the marketing team of the resort proceeded to
introduce what is presumably the first of its kind in the industry.
After drawing lots among the students, the ``chosen one'' emerged as the
one to experience being a hotel General Manager for even a day.
The hotel? The multi-awarded Holiday Inn Resort Clark Field.
The "chosen one" is Noel Castaneda, an HRM student of the Holy Angel
University in Angeles City.
Two days have been allocated for Noel to prepare himself for the
``running'' of the 337 guestroom Holiday Inn Resort Clark Field. On Dec.
3 and 4, Noel will put on the resort hotel's official uniform, his name
tag which will identify him as ``Noel Castaneda, General Manager'' and
walk into the executive offices to conduct the executive committee's
morning meeting (in the presence of the
hotel's real General Manager, Michael Weiss).
It is at these meetings when VIP arrivals are reviewed for double
checking, to ensure all amenities are in place and the proper welcome is
extended. Challenges for the day are also brought up and operational
concerns are addressed.
>From there, our 'GM' will conduct a white glove inspection of a
guest-room chosen at random, accompanied by the executive housekeeper.
This inspection is one of the ways quality standards are maintained.
Noel, who has a special interest in food, will then meet with Joel
Ibardaloza, the hotel's Food & Beverage manager and Chef Maurice
Theoret, the executive chef to review a proposed menu for the Mequeni
Cafe. Noel's preferred menu item will be featured in the Mequeni Cafe
during his scheduled tenure as GM.
The GM's suggestion is Chicken Quesadillas.
>From there, a luncheon will be organized by Michael Weiss where Noel
will meet some of the hotel's department heads and rank and file
employees. This is a Michael Weiss tradition to give the staff an
opportunity to interact with the boss.
Towards afternoon, the young GM will participate in a sales and
marketing meeting where the occupancy and room revenue forecasts will be
reviewed. His ideas will be tapped with respect to activities,
entertainment and food which guests his age (he's only 21 years old) may
be looking for in a world-class resort such as Mimosa.
The day in the life of a hotelier never ends as he does the rounds of
the property's front and back-of-the-house to spot check the operations.
It is said that a good manager ``manages by walking around.''
Since he is also a businessman, the GM keeps tab of the day's revenue
forecasts so Noel will also access the computer system to get an update
on room occupancy, restaurant and banquet revenue and the following
day's forecast.
In the evening, he will host a dinner for his family - a treat with all
the trimmings of fivestar dining. As part of the privilege, Noel and his
family get to stay at a luxurious villa of the Holiday Inn Resort Clark
Field.
Noel, together with Mr. Weiss, will conduct a press conference the
morning after his scheduled assignment. This is where he can share with
the media the highlights of his experience.
Mimosa intends to institutionalize this hotel career development
program. Mimosa's two hotel (Holiday Inn Resort Clark Field and
Montevista) plus the Mimosa Golf & Country Club, Mimosa Regency Casino
and other Mondragon-operated facilities employ a mostly-Capampangan
staff.
Noel Castaneda, like other aspiring hoteliers of the future, now has a
place in the organization like Mondragon's Mimosa Leisure Estate within
which to pursue the career of their dreams. A cross exposure program
will be offered to HRM graduates who wish to have an on-thejob training
and orientation exposure prior to employment.

Luid Manolo,

JAG are the initials of Jose Antonio U. Gonzales, who is not a military
man, but
who thinks is one because they send armed troops to take over the Mimosa
Leisure
Estate.
> Ketang minunang posting ating mesabing "GM" nanu ita? General Manager?
GM stands for General Manager, not General Motors, which doesn't have a
plant in
the Philippines.
> So nanu pala ing milyari ngeni king Mimosa?
For the latest news, read all about it in the Philippine Daily Inquirer
at
http://www. inquirer.net (or is it .com?).

Its impact is on the efforts Mike and I have been exerting for Mimosa,
which is
working on billing itself as the gateway to the pleasures and treasures
of
Pampanga, as evidenced by its Mimosa Queni and Pasko Queni marketing
campaigns.
Should Mimosa be taken over by CDC, we possibly could not expect the
same kind of
campaigns because Colayco is thought to be anti-Kapampangan,
anti-Angeles business
community while JAG is an adopted son of Pampanga due to the Pampanga
Dragons, and
his contributions to the economy of Clark and Angeles, and the
Kapampangan Region
in general. Additionally, Mike has also been able to get some
concessions from
Mimosa for the Aetas, but Mike should be the one to discuss these
things.
