Malacanang said the Department of Justice will pry into reports of
special treatment allegedly accorded Rep. Romeo Jalosjos at the New
Bilibid Prisons.
President Estrada yesterday said that he has given the DOJ a free
hand in verifying allegations that Jalosjos, who was sentenced by a
Makati trial court to life imprisonment in 1997 for statutory rape,
continued to receive VIP treatment at the NBP.
These reports claimed Jalosjos maintains a burger kiosk at the NBP
and stays in an air-conditioned cell complete with a bathtub and
other amenities.
Over the weekend, DOJ Secretary Serafin Cuevas said a surprise
visit to the NBP verified the existence of the burger kiosk, but not
the bathtub and the air-conditioner.
Cuevas cited a report from DOJ Undersecretary Ramon Liwag that the
investigating team could not verify the existence of the bathtub
because Jalosjos had his cell padlocked.
