BACOLOD CITY, March 31 (PNA) -- The Negros Occidental swimming
pool situated at the Pana-ad Park Complex at Barangay Mansilingan in
Bacolod City, the site of the three-day Sanya Samakki Cup, is the "best
in the country" today.
This was disclosed yesterday by Philippine Amateur Swimming
Association (PASA) president Eduardo Ledesma, Jr. at the press
conference at the Igmayaan Hall of the Provincial Administration Center
Building in Bacolod City.
That is why we have staged three top-level swimming competitions
here in Bacolod City. These are the Southeast Asian Age-Group in June
last year, the National Age-Group Tryout for the national training pool
in December and now the Sanya Samakki Cup "Splash-In Negros '99" for the
second time.
Negros Occidental first hosted the Sanya Samakki Cup, the
Southeast Asia Age-Group Swimming Championship, in 1995.
"This is a sign of trust and confidence for our ability in
hosting the meet," Ledesma said on the granting for Philippines hosting
of the meet for the second time by the organizing body, adding that "we
are very honored to host this event as the millennium ends."
He said the Pana-ad Swimming Pool was built in consultation with
PASA and the local government and that it was built with international
standards.
For his part, technical committee head Mark Joseph, who is the
only Filipino member of the Asian Amateur Swimming Federation (AASF),
said Sanya Samakki Founder Woon Sui Kut is expressing his gratitude to
Negros Occidental Governor Rafael Coscolluela and to other people
involve for hosting again the meet after four ears.
On the other hand, the three-day Sanya Samakki Cup, the 26th
Southeast Asia Inter-Club Age-Group Swimming Championship dubbed
"Splash-In Negros '99" kicks off Friday, April 2, at the Pana-ad Park
Swimming Complex with Philippine Sports Commission chairman Carlos
"Butch" Tuason as guest speakear at the opening program set at 3:10 p.m.
Twelve teams coming from Brunei Darrusalam, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines representing 155 swimmers, are
vying for top honors.
The Philippines will be represented by host Negros 2000 Swimming
Club, coached by Boogie Simons with 45 swimmers and Metropolitan
Swimming Network composed of 28 swimmers, mentored by Eric Buhain.
