CLARK FIELD, Pampanga, Dec. 31 (PNA) -- Preparations are underway for
the holding here of the World Scout Centennial jamboree on Jan. 5 to 11
with President Ramos as principal guest and keynote speaker.

Philippine National Police Sr. Supt. Tom Lantion, commander of Task
Force India which is in-charge of security in the 12-hectare world
jamboree site here, said that 35 countries have already signed up to
participate in the week-long jamboree. He said that they are scheduled
to arrive in the Philippines starting this Saturday.

There are 130 member-countries of the international boy and girl
scout organizations with more than three million members. Each country
is sending 20 delegates to the 1998 jamboree.

Lantion said that the jamboree area at the Clark picnic grounds and
park has been divided into 12 scout camp sites which will be secured by
890 personnel of the PNP, Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the Clark
Development Corporation (CDC).

Boy and girl scout delegations from Mindanao and the Visayas have
started arriving at the jamboree site, according to Lantion.

CDC President Romeo S. David has instructed his staff to provide
jamboree delegates all necessary facilities and assistance during their
stay at this former U.S. Air Force base.

The Pampanga provincial government as well as the municipal
governments of nearby Mabalacat in Pampanga, Bamban and Capas in Tarlac
and Angeles City are finalizing their preparations for the holding of
the jamboree.

Organizers of the jamboree said that they would enforce curfew from
10:00 P.M. during the jamboree. They said that delegates would be
restricted in the Clark zone.

Francisco S. Roman, former president of the Boy Scouts of the
Philippines (BSP) and now the chairman of the world scout committee,
said the BSP and the Philippine Congress hosted the 2nd General Assembly
of the World Scout Parliamentary Union in Manila last August.

Roman said that the 1998 international scout jamboree aims to
emphasize the importance of the scout mission in training and preparing
the youth to become responsible leaders and at the same time to imbue to
them the virtue of love of God, country and fellowmen. (PNA) SCS/AMR/aav
