MANILA, Mar. 10 (PNA) -- Blu Detergent is optimistic of better
chances despite its rookie-laden line-up in the 1999 Yakult-PBL
Challenge kicking off Saturday, March 13 at the Makati Coliseum.

Former Three-Point King Glenn Peter Yap is expected to beef up the
core of holdovers Aries Dimaunahan, Ramon Talaga, Patrick Madarang,
Patrick Aquino and 6'7 slotman Gilbert Lao.

But new head coach Binky Favis hinted much of the team's firepower
will be provided by his rookies led by La Salle Green Archer Francis
Zamora, hardworking Robert Allen of San Lorenzo, Mapua's 6'3 forward
Jake Macapagal, and former RP Youth members Henry Ong and Emerson
Oreta--two UST Tigers with deadly hands from the arc.

The other rookies are Bryan Olaguer, Ian Castillo, 6'5 center
Eugene Gutierez, Ian Castillo and Warren Ybanez.

"I'm optimistic about this team. We may have lost Asi Taulava but
our young and very talented rookies promises to be equally exciting.
Attitude-wise, I'm impressed with my players because they're all
hardworking. You'll see a better team, a more aggressive Blu Detergent
Kings this year," said Favis.

But don't count Montana Jewels out. The defensive strength of this
top Davao commercial squad could pull surprises against other teams.

"We can't say what our chances are dahil bago lang kami sa liga.
Pero pwede rin kaming makasilat. I guess our strength is defense and our
players are picking up the adjustment on our play," said coach Rex
Manansala.

Among the top Jewel gunners are 6'4 Gregorio "Jun" Dural, Joselito
Rodrigue, pointguards Arvin Bonleon and Mario Reyes and three-point
shooter Randy Panerio.

Completing the team are Roy Acidre, Ryan Tortal, Rex Armojallas,
Noli Banate, Flordelito Cagampang, Edgar Mariano, Fortunato Sumampong,
Danilo Salvacio and Jigger Saniel.

"We're underdogs pero pipilitin naming makapasok sa quarterfinals.
We'll know what our chances are after we got the feel of competition
after three or four games," added Manansala. (PNA) DCT/PR/zst
