In his report to the President during the Cabinet Strategic Planning
Workshop held yesterday at the Heroes Hall in Malacanang, DPWH Secretary
Gregorio Vigilar also said that two major projects in Metro Manila, the
Edsa-Ayala interchange and the Pandacan-Sta. Mesa Bridge, the 11th
bridge to span the Pasig River, will be inaugurated on Tuesday, December
30, 1997.
The President is scheduled to officiate in the inauguration of the
two projects which are both aimed at easing the traffic problem in the
metropolis.
Vigilar said that among the major infrastructure projects to be
completed before the end of the Ramos administration are the
Santiago-Tuguegarao Road in Cagayan, the Centennial Export Park at Clark
in Angeles City, STAR Expressway Sto. Tomas-Lipa City in Batangas,
C-5/Vargas Flyover, Alabang-Zapote Interchange, Bicutan-Nichols Section
of the Manila Skyway, and the Bamban- Mabalacat Bridge in Tarlac.
Also to be completed, according to Vigilar, are 11 transportation
projects which include the Philippine National Railway Main Line Phase
II, Light Railway Transit Line 1 Capacity Expansion, LRT 1 Automated
Fare Collection, and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal II.
Vigilar, who chaired the Cabinet Cluster D and G, which handled
infrastructure and energy development, also said the government will
fully implement the barangay electrification program which has a total
outlay of P140 million.
The National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), according to Vigilar, will
also pursue the construction of 17 power generation and transmission
projects within the term of President Ramos. These include the
Leyte-Luzon Interconnection, Masinloc coal-fired power project, Bacman
geothermal power project, and the Zamboanga diesel power project.
To mitigate the effects of the El Nino weather disturbance, the
government will also construct, within the next six months, 20,000 small
farm reservoirs, 8,800 shallow tube wells and rehabilitate existing
irrigation systems throughout the country.
Out of the P250 million recently approved from the Calamity Fund to
ease the water problem in Metro Manila, the Metropolitan Waterworks and
Sewerage System (MWSS) will construct and rehabilitate 53 ground water
wells, install 20 wells, and buy water tanks and tankers. (PNA)
