Dubbed as "Palaro ng Bayan," the sports meet is designed for
student athletes whose ages range from 13 to 21.
It is scheduled to conduct eliminations a week after the
launching of the Philippine Sports Commission's "Batang Pinoy"
program, in an effort to fill in the void caused by the cancellation
of this year's Palarong Pambansa.
The annual Palarong Pambansa, which is supposed to be held in
Lanao del Norte, was cancelled due to financial problems.
PSC Chair Carlos Tuason said the government sports agency and
the LMP, through its president Jinggoy Estrada, have agreed to
synchronize their respective meets to provide students-athletes an
alternatives who had been looking forward to the Palarong Pambansa.
"We agreed to synchronize our respective meets in order to
provide our youth more competitions," said Tuason.
Local competitions will kick off the Palaro ng Bayan in the
various local government units. Ten hours top finishers will advance
to the national finals set to be held at the San Luis Sports Complex
in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
It will feature traditional sports and disciplines included in
national and international games.
These events are athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball,
football, baseball, softball, arnis, judo, taekwondo, karatedo, table
tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, boxing, air gun, shooting and billiards.
"This is a nation-wide talent search for new sports heroes since
these top sports events will put greater focus in a community level,"
Tuason added. (PNA)
