[Freeman] Alquizalas orders probe into VSMMC strangling

Medical Center yesterday created a three-man committee to look into
the incident at the psychiatric ward wherein one of its patients was
allegedly strangled to death by another patient last January 18.
Alquizalas named Dr. Filomena delos Santos, the medical staff
division chief, chief nurse Carmelita Villanobos and Lawyer Dionesio
Te, the hospital’s legal counsel ,as members of the ad hoc committee.
The medical director gave the committee ten days to submit the
result of their investigation.
Alquizalas said he received report from Dr. Augusto Costas, chief
of the psychiatric ward about the incident last January 22.
Paul Maluya who has been a resident at the psychiatric ward for 20
years was reportedly killed by his fellow patient Domingo Quines when
the latter got angry after being barred from leaving the hospital.
Costas said the nurse on duty, Patrick Josdesta, reportedly
noticed something unusual when he made rounds on that night.
Alquizalas said the chief of the psychiatric ward, the nurse on
duty and other personnel at the psychiatric ward who may have
knowledge about the incident will be asked to shed light on the
matter.
Alquizalas also ordered the committee to look into the status of
the body which is reportedly in a funeral parlor.
Villanobos in a separate interview said the committee has not
chosen yet as to who will act as chairman but she assured it will
convene as soon as possible.
She said the committee will review Costas’ incident report and
required the nurse on duty to also submit a report.
Villanobos refused to comment on what possible sanctions could be
imposed against personnel at the psychiatric ward who will be found
negligent of their duties saying she does not want to preempt the
