CEBU CITY, Jan. 4 (PNA) -- Despite environmental alarms raised over
the negative impacts of golf course projects, Cebu has continued
development of these facilities in anticipation of more tourist
patronage, more particularly those coming from affluent Asian countries
like Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and others.

Although the 45-hectare golf course of Club Filipino de Cebu in Cebu
City has already been converted into what is known as the Cebu Business
Park, more new golf courses were added to the remaining fairways.

Aside from the Cebu Country Club, and Kan-irag Golf and Country Club,
both in Cebu City, and the Badian Golf and Country Club in the
southwestern town of Badian, Cebu the Alta Vista Golf Course in Pardo,
Cebu City has been put up.

Another golf course has also been opened right inside the Mactan Air
Base in Mactan Island in Lapu-Lapu City.

Under construction with nine holes already completed is the Mercedes
Plantation Golf and Country Club situation in the Bogo-Medellin area in
northern Cebu. Another golf course is also being constucted in the
adjacent town of San Remigio. Both golf courses are located at the
seaside.

In Mactan, the Belle Air Golf and country Club is under construction
with its first nine-hole and will be playable by June this year.

This will raise the number of golf courses that will be in actual
operation in the island-province of Cebu to eight.

The projects are being funded out of shares and membership fees sold
to golf enthusiasts all over the country.

More golf course projects are still being planned for Cebu, according
to a source from the regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT)
in Cebu City. (PNA)
