The CLC-INTERCAL game
The CLC-INTERCAL game is a game of strategy. You receive a number of INTERCAL
keywords with every move and you attempt to combine these words, and any
INTERCAL statements already on the board, to produce more valid INTERCAL
statements. The statements are executed immediately: if the execution
produces a splat (INTERCAL-speak for error), you lose your move; if the
statement completes without splats it gets added to the board in the way
you requested and you gain some score points. Since the game relies on the
CLC-INTERCAL compiler, executing the statement may have the side effect to
modify the compiler itself (using "CREATE", "DESTROY", "CONVERT" or "SWAP":
this modification to the compiler in turn changes the language accepted.
As you've guessed, there is a further twist. The game is treated as a single
Quantum INTERCAL program; the game board is simply the superposition of all
the moves. This implies that any move which modifies the compiler itself can
have retroactive effect, making a "previous" move invalid and causing the
person who made the move to lose the corresponding score. It may also cause
a previously invalid move to become valid, therefore gaining score points to
the corresponding player. An example will completely fail to clarify matters:
Player A inflicts the following upon the other players (spaces added for
legibility):
PLEASE DO .1 <- '!1 / *' ~ .1 ¢ "* ~ #¥7 ~ .&253"'
Since no error has yet occurred, it is invalid to use the "splat" operator,
hence this move is invalid (of course, the first occurrence is perfecly valid,
it's only the second which produces an error), and the player loses the move
and does not gain any points. Later, however, the same player enters:
DO .8
This is a syntax error, and causes a splat when executed. The player loses
this move, with its small score (2), but gains the much larger score (38)
from the previously lost move, which now succeeds.
Soon afterwards, player B says:
PLEASE CREATE ?VERB ?REGISTER
This is quite a good move: while player B only gains a small score, this move
also makes the last move by A valid so that A's larger score for the statement
which uses "splat" vanishes, to be replaced by the much smaller score for the
statement which originally splatted. B gains eight points, A loses thirtysix.
It goes without saying that Quantum statements are allowed. However it
must be pointed out that, unlike the normal CLC-INTERCAL compiler, the one
embedded in the game considers the first execution of any Quantum statement
as an observation of such statement. As a consequence, as soon as the player
enters one such move, the compiler decides which of the possible states to
select, and any subsequent execution (which may be caused by a modification
to the compiler, requiring re-evaluation of each move) will select the same
state as previously observed. This is not cast in stone: it is possible to
disable this feature and have a new state selected each time the compiler is
modified or indeed each time the game engine consider that it has sufficient
cause for re-evaluation of past moves. This makes the game impossible to
play while conserving one's sanity, but, hey, you are using INTERCAL and
you deserve everything you get.
Since you are still reading here, we might as well tell you how to install
the game and even how to play it once you have installed it.

To play the game you need:
* The INTERCAL game server, which is installed in "PREFIX/sbin/igmp".
This can be started from the command line or be automatically started
at boot time as long as you are not using a normal init system or
even systemd.
* At least two human volunteers, each one running an INTERCAL game
client, "PREFIX/bin/igg". The current supports all user interfaces
available to the "intercalc" desk calculator.
* A pre-booked space in a mental hospital for each human volunteer.
A future release of the game may allow people to play against the computer for
cases when human volunteers are in short supply or mental hospitals overbooked.
Extensive instructions on the game can be obtained by executing the command
"I AM STUCK" in the game client. In general, anything you type which
starts with "PLEASE" or "DO" is counted as a move, and checked against the
keywords currently available to you and the current state of the game (you
also need to supply two vectors so the game server knows where you want to
make your move: see the documentation). If what you type starts with "I AM",
it is interpreted as a command to the game client itself (in a way similar
to the ".sickrc" file used by CLC-INTERCAL 1.-94 which contains statements
the compiler is supposed to identify with). Anything else you type will be
interpreted somehow by the game client, but it is intentionally undocumented
how. To quit the game, inform the game client that "I AM FED UP" (Using
"PLEASE GIVE UP" as a move has no effect: to see why, remember what happens
when you use this statement in a Quantum INTERCAL program). If all players
quit a game, the game is considered finished and the scores are recorded
by the game server. When starting a client, you will have the choice of
connecting to any games already in progress, or to start a new one.
The game server will issue each client with keywords at predefined intervals.
The game client will list moves made by other players as well as any new
keywords issued by the server. The players can play at any time as long as
they possess the necessary keywords. Network and other delays are considered
part of the game. This means that if two players move at about the same
time there's no telling whose move goes first. Any player who needs to be
reminded of the game state and what keywords are available, he or she should
admit to the game client: "I AM CONFUSED".
