Awk base menu examples

I'm currently working on a retro bbs system for POSIX complient OS's and
wondering if anyone has any resources they can direct me towards for building
interactive menus in AWK?
At current I can display the menu and get a selection but I'm stuck on having
that selection pulled back into awk for the menu to render the next 'view'.
Any tips would be welcome.
