Have 24ft X 36ft concrete patio directly behind my garage - and it is ugly.
For many reasons, removal is not an option. Have put a wood deck over a
small portion of it, and a raised flower bed against the garage wall - all
of which helped, but still have a massive ugle expanse of grey concrete. Any
inexpensive do-it-yourself suggestions?

Cover it with pavers, flagstone, bluestone, etc. Or you could do a
stained/colored topping.

You might want to consider obtaining some rubberized material (eg. a
blown/used car or truck tire "tube"), cutting it to obtain a large section
of flat tubing and cutting a design/pattern into it to create a
stencil/template. Attach this using double sided tape to the offending
surface and rent a sand-blaster. By using a "blaster" you can etch almost
anything you can think of into the concrete. The etched portion can be left
bare or painted as you see fit ... just an idea
... good luck
