1. Who's on alt.kids-talk?
We are (right now) between twenty and forty people with Usenet access. We
log on in a variety of ways to a variety of systems. We are not all kids
but we are all receptive to other kids. We are not all adults either. the
age range is between approximatley 12 and 28 but anyone is welcome no
matter if they're 6 or 60. The only thing that everyone on a.k-t has in
common is a link to the net and this newsgroup. This is good.
2. Why do we know each other so well?
Many of the people that post to a.k-t have been posting for many months or
even years, friendships have been formed and most people have been accepted
as "regulars", the name we have for people who post regularly and
frequently. In addition to this many akters talk on email as well as news.
3. What do we talk about?
There are no set topics, we talk about anything we want to. If you want a
topic to be discussed then simply post and ask for opinions. However, there
are a few important things to remember; first and most important is that
you are responsible for everything you post. Personal attacks are likely to
earn you much scorn, but as long as you follow these guidlines you can't go
wrong:
o We don't like reading put-downs to anybody inside or outside the group.
o If you're polite, nobody can bother you.
o We do not practice censorship here, things like bad language are allowed.
o If this disturbs you, don't read the group or use filtering software to
filter out the bad language.
4. What's a 'spew'?
"A "spew" is a message that someone writes while in a state where they are
at one their keyboard - their mind is open, and the thoughts just stream
out their fingers into the medium so that we can read and share in the
experience. Basically, a spew is just a dump about anything, though it's
mostly about your life, or someone else's life."

5. Where can I find penpals?
There is a seperate newsgroup specifically for penpals: alt.kids-
talk.penpals. This was created because people who read a.k-t are not
looking for penpals. You're more likely to find a penpal of similar
interests on alt.kids-talk.penpals or you could also try soc.penpals
because there's a wider variety there, not found on akt.
There is also a group for parents, misc.kids (they have a pointer to us in
their FAQ, so we'll return the favour :) )
We will not be held responsible for any mental or physical damage resulting
from a penpal post sent to a.k-t ;)
6. What don't we want to hear about?
We do not care to read:
1) Flames. If you're going to tell a person what an idiot they are, then
do it by e-email. Or, better yet, don't do it at all. Try and remember
that on the other end of the Net are real people. There are people who
don't recognize this, they've hurt people in the past believing that
they were "Only posting to the 'Net...."
2) In the same theme as #1, personal attacks.
3) MAKE.MONEY.FAST and such like matters.
4) Commercial advertising.
Also, we don't like to see discrimination of any kind, whether based on
religion, race, appearance or even text editors. On the net the only way
you can judge someone is by who they are and what they write. Remember this
not only before you judge someone but also before you post something that
could insult a lot of people ...
7. What should be on e-mail rather than in a public newsgroup?
If you want to talk to one person specifically then please use private
e-mail rather than posting to the newsgroup. This would make life more
convenient for you and also the people on the group. The difference between
e-mail and public posting is that anyone can read what you post on a group
whereas only you and the recipient can read what goes via e-mail.

8. What's with the sheep?
Sheep are the akt mascot. in some cases they are an object of affection,
in others they are a scapegoat, but in most cases they are the subject of
disgusting jokes. Reference: Ashley, Dave T, Kirsty.
9. What's with all the piles of >>s?
One > (or : for some systems) means that the person you are following up
to or replying to wrote that line of text, two >s means that the person
_they_ were following up to wrote that line. If you don't edit your
followups and replies then a large part of the message can consist of >>>s
which makes it difficult for others to read. Also, you should not delete
the top couple of headers when you follow up but you should delete
signatures.
10."What's your problem?"
"I've been trying to figure that out for a while now. Read a bit, and
maybe you can tell me. Everyone has a problem. Some of use turn to
alt.kids-talk to help solve it. Some get an answer and walk away happy,
and others explode. Just personal preference, I guess."

mickey has met anthony and riku. riku has met mickey and cameron (gtg)
sasha has met dave brown.
kirsten has met anthony, dave brown and kris. kris has met dave and kirsten
dave has met sasha, kris, kirsten
anthony has met mickey and kirsten
cameron has met riku.
tammy, kirsty and ashley have met eachother also ashley and terry have met.
mel and doug have met eachother.
12. To answer the inevitable question "where are we from" here's a quote
from Sascha Segan.
Well, let's see if I can get this right. Dave and Amy are from
Saskatchewan. Mika is from Finland. Shadows is from under your bed.
Riku's from Lothlorien. Andrea's from someplace else entirely. Anthony
and Eric are from California, Vince lives on the edge but at least it's
a straight one, Alexandra might be from Quebec but certainly won't admit
it, Tammy, Terry, Ashley & Kirsty are back in the UK, Hersh is out of town
right now, Kirsten's always at college, Ana's from the most boring place on
earth (so she says :-) ) and me ... well, I move around, which is why I
tend to fade in and out.

13. What does a.k-t mean to us?

particular order but take the time to read them, since they capture the
spirit of this group (or something like that!)

same here, if anyone sees a glaring mistake in the FAQ - like perhaps
spelling "brought" wrongly (which has been corrected!) - or anything at all
then let me know. also there will be _no seperate_ mailbox anymore for the
FAQ (due to change of access provider and thus a move to pop3 email) so the

this part was updated last week, but alas i wont be able to change anything
until at least 3 or 4 weeks time. i'll save this (well, your reply to this)
and make the changes when i can.

I think that all the FAQ should use standard English capitalization
rules, as it's an "official" document. Capital letters for names all
around.

caps counter and quote counter which is updated as you type. and it'll
hassle you if your post has more than a given percentage of caps in it.

don't worry, i'll give it a good look over - and i'll probably miss things,
theres probably glaring mistakes there that nobodys picked up yet - but we
can improve it over time :)
talking about time, i think that it will remain as it is for atleast 3 or 4
weeks now. i have _much_ more important things coming up, starting this
sunday but i need this weeks spare time to do stuff for that - and of

Use a machine that speaks proper ISO-8859-1 then. Say, your Amiga. The
ó in Lothlórien is an o with an acute accent on it, and the æ in
pædantic is an ae ligature.

1. Who's on alt.kids-talk?
We are (right now) between twenty and forty people with Usenet access. We
log on in a variety of ways to a variety of systems. We are not all kids
but we are all receptive to other kids. We are not all adults either. the
age range is between approximatley 12 and 34 but anyone is welcome no
matter if they're 6 or 60. The only thing that everyone on a.k-t has in
common is a link to the net and this newsgroup. This is good.
2. Why do we know each other so well?
Many of the people that post to a.k-t have been posting for many months or
even years, friendships have been formed and most people have been accepted
as "regulars", the name we have for people who post regularly and
frequently. In addition to this many akters talk on email as well as news.
Many of us also have a hard time paying our phone bills, and are much loved
by our local phone companies :-)
3. What do we talk about?
There are no set topics, we talk about anything we want to. If you want a
topic to be discussed then simply post and ask for opinions. However, there
are a few important things to remember; first and most important is that
you are responsible for everything you post. Personal attacks are likely to
earn you much scorn, but as long as you follow these guidlines you can't go
wrong:
o We don't like reading put-downs to anybody inside or outside the group.
o If you're polite, nobody can bother you.
o We do not practice censorship here, things like bad language are allowed.
o If this disturbs you, don't read the group or use filtering software to
filter out the bad language.

I don't :), but my own SMTP server does the same thing with incoming mail.
And I of course forget that it does it. Hmm, I might start using
Content-Length or a directory-with-files method of receiving mail some day.
I could add something like that to my SMTP server pretty easily, but I'm not
sure if I want to go around modifying elm etc. (elm, cat, and a few minimal
C programs of my own are about the only things that I use to read mail).
