HEAD AND LEG ANNOUNCES WEB RESOURCE GUIDE
FOR ECLECTIC RECORDINGS
************************************

May 25, 1996 - Audio artists HEAD AND LEG are proud to announce a brand
new resource for fans of "eclectic" recordings. The "Head and Leg Eclectic
Recordings Resource Guide" ("HALERRG!") is designed to give creators and
fans of experimental recordings, spoken word and sound collage a place to
broaden their knowledge of obscure and under-promoted works and artists.
The inaugural edition of the guide includes listings on KEN NORDINE,
WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS, HARRY PARTCH, JOE FRANK and others. The guide
includes descriptive abstracts for each artist, as well as discographies,
contact information and links to related web resources. The guide is part
of the Head and Leg website, at "http://www.reading.com/headleg".

The creators of the HALERRG! are Ken Lacouture and Robert Pierce,
collectively known as "Head and Leg". Pierce and Lacouture have recently
completed Head and Leg's first album, "IN YOUR DREAMS", a mixture of sound
collage, spoken narratives, music and comedy. The pair are longtime fans
of offbeat and experimental recordings, whether it be tape-based
compositions, sonic experimentation or spoken word albums. As they built
their website, they realized it could also be utilized to help make the
obscure records and artists they liked less obscure.

"We started to meet a lot of artists and fans of off-beat stuff as a
result of IN YOUR DREAMS," states Lacouture. "As we talked with them, we
noticed that everyone seemed to know about an artist or record that we
hadn't heard about before, and with a few exceptions, nobody shared this
knowledge in common. It seemed natural that we should take all the
information that was flowing our way and put it in one place - a kind of
distribution center - so that the chances of other people finding would
increase."

The HALERRG! is intended to introduce it's users to new artists, and
provide additional information about artists they are already familiar
with. The listings consist of brief descriptive abstracts, discographies,
information about commercial availability, artist and record company
contacts, and links to other websites that provide more in-depth
information. "We're attempting to create a fairly comprehensive reference
site that people will find useful, and visit frequently," says Lacouture.

As to what qualifies as "eclectic" recordings, Lacouture considers it a
catch-all term for anything that doesn't fit neatly into the standard
Rock/Jazz/Classical/Soundtrack bins at the local record mega-mart. "This
is material that frequently lives on the fringes of the commercial
recording industry. Someone like Steven Jesse Bernstein or Maggie Estep is
never going to benefit from big industry marketing support. There is a fan
base for such work, but because these artists don't fit the "mainstream",
the market doesn't provide a means for the information to get to potential
fans. It's always either serendipity or word of mouth. That makes it very
important for fans to share their knowledge as much as possible" Lacouture
also sees the HALERRG! as an effort in community building. "We want to
increase awareness of the artists we enjoy, because we know that there are
lots of other people who would enjoy them too, if only they knew of their
existence. Fans of eclectic recordings are a group that's just waiting to
be brought together."

In addition, Head and Leg hope that the guide will improve their own
listening experiences. "Our knowledge of obscure recordings is far from
complete, and it's extremely seldom that we hear about innovative
"non-musical" works that turn us on. And exploration can be daunting in a
financial sense; it's not easy to plunk down fifteen bucks on a hunch only
to find out it's just meandering abstract noise or dreadful poetry recited
in a flat voice." Their hope is that the guide will serve as a catalyst
for people to share information and recommendations with them. Head and
Leg welcome - indeed, strongly suggest - that people contact them with new
information, suggest new listings, and supplement and correct existing
listings. In the future the scope may be expanded to include listings
created by people outside of Head and Leg, in a "collaborative" effort.

And altruism aside, Lacouture also admits to a "selfish" motivation for
the HALERRG! "We wanted our webpage to be more than just a commercial for
our record. But if, as a result, more people visit our site and get turned
on to IN YOUR DREAMS, well, that doesn't hurt either..."

I just wanted to give this web page an extra plug. I visited it a few
days ago and by far this is the best web page on spoken word material I've
seen. If you like Ken Nordine and other poets/spoken word artists, take a
look. The address is http://www.reading.com/headleg

WILL be, Michael, will be! Soon I hope. I plan on doing a WHOLE lot more
listings as soon as I can get around to doing the research. But I do thank
you for the plug, and I encourage all spoken word fans to send info about
their favorite artists to "hea...@aol.com"

In the meantime, does anyone out there have a discography of ORIGINAL
Nordine releases? I'm interested in original titles, release dates and
catalog numbers.
