Axed "Dateline" producer slams popular "Predator" series as unethical
MAY 29--In a scathing broadside at NBC's popular "To Catch a Predator"
series, a former producer charges that she was canned last year after
complaining that the show violated "numerous journalistic ethical standards"
and many of the network's own "policies and guidelines." In a breach of
contract lawsuit, Marsha Bartel, 49, alleges that her 21-year career at NBC
ended months after her August 2006 appointment as "sole producer" of "To
Catch a Predator," which conducts sting operations targeting men seeking
illicit liaisons with children they've met online. According to her
complaint, which was filed last week in U.S. District Court in Chicago,
Bartel charges that many of the program's ethical lapses stem from its
relationship with Perverted Justice, a shadowy vigilante group that the show
uses to "troll for and lure targets into its sting." A copy of Bartel's
lawsuit can be found below. According to Bartel, by paying Perverted
Justice, NBC has given the group a "financial incentive to lie to trick
targets of its sting." The identities of the group's 50-plus volunteers were
kept secret from her, Bartel says, adding that Perverted Justice does not
provide "complete transcripts from its trolling operations," so network
officials "cannot independently verify the accuracy" of the group's
transcripts. In some instances, Bartel claims, sting targets are "led into
additional acts of humiliation (such as being encouraged to remove their
clothes) in order to enhance the comedic effect of the public exposure of
these persons." She also charges that NBC has unethically covered up the
fact that law enforcement officials have acted improperly while working in
conjunction with the "To Catch a Predator" crew, such as "goofing off by
waving rubber chickens in the faces of sting targets while forcing them to
the ground and handcuffing them." Bartel says that when she "raised
concerns" about controversial comments made by Perverted Justice's founder,
David Corvo, executive producer of the newsmagazine "Dateline," responded,
"We all know they're nuts." Bartel, who signed a four-year contract in March
2006, contends that soon after reporting her concerns about "To Catch a
Predator" to NBC management, she was terminated effective December 24, 2006.
While NBC told her she was part of a "mass layoff precipitated by general
business factors," Bartel alleges that she was canned in retaliation for
insistence on "ethical and accurate reporting on the Predator series." NBC,
she adds, was "more interested in sensationalizing and dramatizing the
Predator series for profit than news reporting." Bartel is seeking at least
$1 million in damages from NBC. In a statement, NBC said it has been
"transparent about our reporting" on the Predator series, for which audience
reaction has been "overwhelmingly positive. NBC News is proud of its
reporting and we believe this lawsuit is without merit." (10 pages)

"Because Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right"

Chris Hansen should never work as a journalist ever again.

Is he working as a journalist now?

"To Catch a Predator" has enjoyed an immunity from any critical review
due to its ratings and the obvious wish for critics not to be depicted
as sympathizing with pedophiles.

The problem is that however much good TCaP may seem to do, it is
absolutely not journalism.

The specials should probably be reclassified as alternative
programming outside the auspices of Dateline NBC or NBC News in
general.

He's not a journalist. And there will always be a place for his ilk
in corporate "news" media. In fact, he's considered hot property by
the imbeciles who run the networks and who hire people like Nancy
Grace.

See, the way the rules work, if it's "journalism" or "hard news", then
they can legally put your face on TV without your permission. But if
it's "entertainment", then they need a legal release first.

That's why the show COPS has to blur out many of the faces of the people
they come in contact with. The show is not a news show so they have to
get permission. Anyone who has a blurred face obviously refused to give
permission.

They are not child molesters. Remember that most of the decoys are over 21.

*sigh* You're kidding right? For one some of the decoys have been as young
as 18 if I recall correct. Two what difference does that make anyway when
the assholes caught think they are meeting underage boys and girls? They
think they are going to have sex with minors. To me that screams child
molester, child predator, sick fuck, whatever term you want to use. And to
feel sorry for them because they're humiliated? Fuck out of here.
Humiliation is THE LEAST of what should happen to them. I can't believe this
shit. Sympathy for child fuckers. Damn shame.

People who want to have sex with people who can have sex cannot rightly be
labelled with any of these. I think the term you're looking for is
"attempted statutory rapist." There is an obvious grey area between these
categories but I don't think you could put it at less than 16 years of age
(the lowest age of consent in the U.S., IIRC).

The ends justify the means, huh?

I hope you're not in any position of authority in this country, otherwise
we're heading back towards justice by lynch mob. The criminal justice
system should not be mixed with entertainment- doing so turns it into
something cheap and voyeuristic and about satisfying bloodlust rather than
actually deterring crime.

Teenagers are not kids. I will grant you that they aren't adults (and
therefore can't give meaningful consent) but they for sure ain't kids.

You didn't read a single thing I wrote, did you? Shows like this turn the
criminal justice system (which I have a great deal of respect for) into
nothing but a perverted sideshow.

Crime fighting is something that's best done as logically, methodically, and
frankly as divorced from emotion as possible. Mixing in emotional knee jerk
reactions turns justice into vengeance.

I'm not a "liberal hippie". Rather I'm someone who believes in the system,
and believes it should not be skirted and circumvented in any way and stands
up fine on its own. I love cops and believe they do a great job. Putting
segments like this on the air is less about helping them and more about
ratings for NBC.

No... apparently what we have here is a far right-wing lunatic who wouldn't
know a liberal if one bit him on the ass wearing a sign.... but had rather preach
his political seperatism and partisan politics before discussing the fact that a
democracy requires multiple political parties and multiple viewpoints; and requires
working *together* for outcomes and laws that will represent the higher and greater
good for the *majority* of citizens - not the elite few or some other special interests.
