If you have symptoms of a bad accelerator pump, you might want to check
this link out before you mess with it too much.

The Carter BBD is bad for getting plugged up idle tubes that act very
similar to a bad acc pump.

Here is a link with a test and if needed fix for them, worked wonders on
my 86.

http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/engine/carter.html

To adjust the accelerator pump if needed.

Make sure the throttle butterfly valve is all the way closed by backing
off the idle screw and moving the choke out of the way.

Put a straight edge across the top of the carb air intake and measure
down a half inch to the top of the pump shaft. If it isn't there at
1/2", then adjust it up or down.

Mixture, well the BBD is a computer controlled carb. The mix is set by
the stepper motor on the back of it according to sensor inputs to the
computer.

The screws are just there because the two types of Carters are the same
except for the addition of the stepper motor for the computer controlled
one.

On the 'normal' carter turning the screws in leans it out.

I took the computer out of my 86 and just set the carb up manually with
the mix screws. I think it settled down at about 2 3/4 turns out on the
screws.

Hope this helps,

Mike

You might want to test the carb main throttle shaft, which (on the cheap rebuilds and the original) do not have bushings on it.Mine was shot and the source of a huge vacuum leak, that is very hard to find. Just grab the shaft and see how much play is there, there should not be very much. If there is give J & J carb a buzz, they are the only shop that I know of that puts bushings in there rebuilt carbs. I bought one from them about a year ago, running good ever since.
As for the mixture screws, they are for the idle. Screw them in until the RPM's drop by about 50 then back out 1/4 turn.

Good luck
