This problem happens intermittentally, but more frequently as time
goes on. I'm thinking maybe a relay, but I really have no idea.
Everything else is working fine.
I can force the interior lights off with the dash light dimmer switch
on the turn signal lever, but then I have no dash lights at nighttime.
Door locks work with remote, but no buttons on the drivers door
(locks, mirror, windows) work.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

2004 Grands use a body control module that controls locks/windows/and
overhead lights. You need to have someone with a scantool check what
errors are in the system. It could be as simple as a broken
wire. I hope so because those modules are expensive.

If you can find a schematic online, try disconnecting and reconnecting
the plug to that module. Sometimes a bit of corrosion is enough to mess
things up.

Found the problem. Broken ground wire in the harness that runs between
the driver's door and the body. Apparently this happens a lot. Thanks
for your help!

Hello,
I am having the exact same problem, is there anyway you can send me more info as to how you found the wire and where was it located? Anything additional would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Aure

Have you tried disconnecting the battery to see the control will reset?

2004 was before they put all that electronic junk in the doors.

Almost 90% sure I know your problem. Same thing got me.

Check the rubber boot/loom that runs between the door and
the frame. Odds are you have a broken wire in there. Look
for a real heavy gauge black wire. The orange one can break
as well.

You can stip and splice these rather than paying big bucks for
the harness. Just remember to do all work with the battery
disconnected. :)

I had the same problem and just repaired it. The thick black wire in the wiring harness under the black boot in the drivers side door jam was broken. I used a butt splice to reconnect and everything works fine now.

I reconnect the broken wire and my windows work again but is there something else that could be causing my interior lights to stay on?

Had same issues today with the wife's 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First I got a message about the passenger door being open still. After stopping the Jeep and closing the door again it went away but the windows and locks stopped working on the passenger side front and back doors (odd thing... passenger side door could lock and unlock all the doors while driver's could not). I then noticed that the interior lights would not go off. Checked everything and decided to put the #7 fuse to get the lights to go out and went straight home.

Found this post and checked the passenger side front door's wires. Sure enough the "yellow" wire was broke. I patched that up and now everything works fine.

Thanks to everyone that replied here for the help!

I have been dealing with this problem/problems with my daughters 2004 Jeep GC.. To me ,its not "if" there are broken wires in the door boot, but almost "always' are!! The doors ( both driver and passenger) are constantly swung open, and these wires are not made to flex... terrible system flaw.. I've jumped a 1/2 dozen with wire nuts and extra wire, everytime these problems start, and that fixes it.. could not get interior lights to go off, power doors to unlock, windows up/down ( all because broken black or orange and white, wires broke.( just remember to check BOTH doors, by tugging on the bunch, guaranteed , one wire will be cut!! I am not a mechanic, and it was an easy fix for me.
