The list of IRC channels changes by the minute and is different on
each IRC network. The command is /list to get a listing of the
channels on whatever IRC network you are connected to through an IRC
server.

There are some permanent channels on some systems that are always
available but the rest are created by the users and they constantly
change; therefore, a channels list made today would not necessarily be
valid tomorrow.

plus you can also list channels which have more than a certain number of
clients there. An example of wanting to view which channels have 10 or
more people on them would be the command;-
/list -min 10
That should be quicker than waiting for 1000's of channels to appear and
you possibly being disconnected because the server is busy

I thought you would see the same channels on any IRC server you logon to?

Please see my follow-up to the thread "something confuses me."

What channels you see depends upon what network the IRC server is
connected to.

On any IRC server that is connected to the same IRC network (and
isn't split), yes. There are, however, different IRC networks - simply
different bunches of servers. DALnet, Undernet and EFnet are the major
ones, EFnet being the biggest and DALnet being the smallest, and Undernet
being somewhere in between... All IRC networks differ in size, services
and attitudes.

Actually, it's your irc client that limits the list you see to -min 10
or whatever; the irc server will still list all of the channels and
can still get flooded when you request the listings.
