Contact the sysadmin at your place of work and ask him to open the port
for you.

Most system administrators block IRC ports at the firewall to prevent
"casual chatting" at work. You're best bet is to use java to enter your IRC
network (usually uses standard ports 80, 1080 or 8080, ports that system
admins don't block) if it has a java client online.

Perhaps your workplace has blocked IRC for a reason, and you should abide
by your employer's decision?

Of course, most networks log the sites employees connect to, so
they'll know that she's chatting anyway.

Let's think here for a second. Is Chatting on irc REALLY worth your
job? Hmmm and if ya did get around the block and they catch ya just
think of the reference you'll get from them for your next
application/interview :
"She SUCKS as an employee cause shes a sneak and a slacker who doesn't
want to work (Just chats all the time) BUT she is a good network
system /firewall hacker!
Grow up and Work at work and chat from home!
I would have said the same thing--imagine having to work for your
money--next thing is she will say oh i was just going to use it during
breaks and lunch---well how about just reading a book or getting to know
someone IRL hey now theres an idea......................

> Why do people allways talk down on other people about computers? do you
Just about computers? Naaaah, they do it about everything. Pick a
side and fight. It's (some people's) human nature. Others have lived
enough to learn not to sweat the details.
I've listened hard and long over the years to those insisting there's
a lot of value to be gained from irc; so much so that I've forced
myself to play with it some recently. I find the signal to noise
ratio higher than what I'm used to (Usenet), but not un-managably so.
Still, I've not reached the point of critical mass where I can say,
"Yeah, this is worth the time." But, I'm patient.
I don't know what all of you irc zealots see in irc, but it's
certainly not anything that anyone should be ashamed of doing.
However, if you're driven to irc at work, maybe you should ask if
there's anything that needs to be done. Or find a job that stimulates
you. Or take another look (walk) through your code. Are you sure
you've handled all the spec's requirements? Including the ones the
marketroids didn't think of? Just a thought.

> RL.....
I used to work with a guy who was "chat"ting me all the time. I hated
the interruption. Why wasn't he looking around for something
"productive" to do? Not that communicating with one's contemporaries
isn't productive, but why couldn't he just write me email?
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Deal with it. =[]-)

I dunno :) plug the phoneline in your laptop?? Wouldnt know
But if you could start mIRC or whatever client you have there, try and find
a server with unusual ports like 5000 or 31337 open... :))
