I think some of our responses in the past have generated a feeling in
some people that they must first apologize for asking questions. I'm
glad to see that, over the past few days, we, as a group, have
responded without insulting the person posting the question. Let's
continue this trend.
Personally, I have learned a lot from reading responses to "stupid"
questions. I know a little about IRC and respond when I can but there
are lots of things I don't know and can benefit from the "experts".

Just a happyfriendly reminder:
There's absolutely no such thing as a stupid question in channel #irchelp,
either... once you make it online, if you're having problems, drop by and
ask. The worst-case-scenario is either (1) we don't know the answer or
(2) we can't answer (re bots/scripts)... at least on EFnet.
Hope to see you...

Aye, there's the rub. I'd estimate that over 50% of the traffic on
#irchelp deals with mIRC, bots, or scripts (and mIRC bot questions, of
course!). The channel topic invariable states, in bold letters (so as to
stand out from the show_channel_names) no bot/script questions, /join
#mirc for mirc questions.
So, do these qualify as stupid questions?

ObBob: I'm with Marci on this one. Your post made me want to go out and
flame every newbie instead of help them.

Not stupid questions at all, just ones that we (actually, someone previous
to me) decided didn't belong on #irchelp b/c they would require extensive
tutorials, in most cases, that would take time from questions from newbies
etc that are more crucial to their enjoyment of IRC. On top of which, 1/2
of that 1/2 are questions about clonebots, war scripts, etc... which we
ain't gonna touch.
We answer mIRC questions, too... but if it's something that's scripting or
bot, or that we don't *know*, we send 'em to #mirc b/c that's what #mirc's
there for =)

Is there something wrong here? Hello? The name of this newsgroup is
called alt.irc.QUESTIONS. We are in an atmosphere where it is good to
ask QUESTIONS. We should not be responding with insutling comments.
That would only be rude, lame, pathetic, and a waste of time. Why
should a newbie feel stupid? The're not stupid, they're only new. I
hope this was an "April Fool's Day" joke on your part. Because if it
isn't, you need to take a look on how you treat people.

And *you* need to read the Newsgroups: line in the header. Especially the
alt.irc part.
Chill.

Pehaps you're not familiar with the term "cross-posting." I suggest
you look it up.

He obviously misread my post because I support everything he is
saying.

He must be stupid :) We already know he's unfamiliar with the concept of
crossposting.

: i'm left wondering why i can never get into #irchelp. is it a
: netcom site ban?? netcom "ixers" have as bad a reputaion for being
: clueless as aol users. so wheres the first logical place a ixer would
: go?? #irchelp of course. why the hell are those who need this channel
: the most banned from it?
I have been told that the reason is that nobody on #irchelp is familiar
enough with that lame ass underfeatured client that netcom has stuck you all
with to be of much help. Plus, there were so many ixers joining just to be
greated with "*shrug* I dunno" that they just decided to ban all ixers.
My suggestion would be for those ixers who have clues to set up a help
channel just for netcruiser users.

I am fairly new, though I would no longer consider myself a "newbie".
But when I was, the most I could do was post a message on a newsgroup,
not go searching for an FAQ that is only posted once a month. What
would be more helpful is an answer to the questions AND a pointer to
the FAQ. That way, everyone is happy.
