Hello,
Trying to install an Iomega SCSI zip 100 internal on machine running WinXP.
Extremely frustrated. Problem is that whenever I connect the zip drive to
the SCSI card, WinXP hangs while booting just after showing desktop
background, no icons show, no splash screens, nuthin'. If I wait 5 minutes
or so I can call up the task manager with the ctrl-alt-del three finger
salute which doesn't help much. (Shows CPU at 0%, and all the regular
processes EXCEPT explorer, running. Has anyone out there ever gotten this
drive to work under WinXP? Is there some trick I'm missing?

Have tried: (without success, no change in behavior for all below)
Two different SCSI cards Adaptec AHA-2930U2, Tekram DC-315U. Both cards work
with this Zip drive in another machine running Win98SE. (Have swapped in and
out multiple times)
Both cards using latest drivers
SCSI ID and termination is fine (Works on other machine)
SCSI cards are both recognized and loaded by WinXP (But can never boot with
zip connected)
SCSI cards both function with external SCSI scanner attached.
Have latest Adaptec ASPI layer (v4.71-2) installed
Disable/enable bios scan of zip drive on SCSI cards.
Disable/enable Wide negotiation on SCSI cards
Change "transfer" speed to every available option (80, 40, 20, 10, 5?,
async ) MB/s
Changed Zip SCSI ID to every other option (1,2,3,4,5,6)
Add additional termination to SCSI cable. (Zip drive set/jumper to have
active termination.)
Try two other SCSI cables. (All three function in other machine)
Have tried the 30 minute 'wait and see' hoping WinXP is just slow to
recognize zip drive, no difference
Have tried to boot with Zip disk inserted in drive... no change.

Machine:
Abit NV7m (nforce1) w/ AMD AthlonXP 1800+
using internal Nforce video (no AGP conflicts should exist)
Antec True380 380W Power supply (power Ain't the problem)
Generic PCI 56k modem
Koutech 7002 USB2/Firewire PCI card
WinXP Pro w/sp1 and all updates

Additional Info:
Zip drive is recognized at the correct SCSI ID by both card configuration
utilities.
Zip drive powers up (lights) when machine boots
With Zip drive NOT connected to SCSI card but machine booted (and zip drive
powered) Zip drive accepts zip disk (loads and spins up even) and will eject
disk. (i.e., it works when powered only, but while NOT connected to SCSI)
NO Iomega software is loaded. (I do not want their software, only a
removable drive in WinXP) I cannot get a answer from Iomega whether the
Ioware software/drivers need to be installed before connecting zip drive. I
have had very bad experience with Ioware in the past and hesitate to use any
of their software.

Other questions: (Iomega refuses to answer these most basic questions:
Is there some special configuration or version of ASPI required? (I needed
to install the Adaptec ASPI layer to get the Scanner to work. It would
'load' at WinXP boot, but would not function until the ASPI layer was
installed)
Do the drivers/software need to be installed BEFORE connecting zip drive to
computer? (This is NOT clear from your website. Presently, there is NO
Iomega 'IOWARE' software installed.)
Is there a "just driver" download so I don't have to install Iomega software
that I DO NOT WANT? (Really I just want a removable drive in explorer, NOT
Iomega s'ware)
Does the parallel port patch load just drivers? (it says "iodrv 4.0.3" on
the dwnld page, would that imply that these could be used for all zip
drives?)
Are the correct drivers supplied with WinXP? (That's all I'm relying on at
this point.)

Iomega says that ALL zip 100 drives will work under WinXP. Microsoft shows
the Zip 100 SCSI insider as 'compatible' with WinXP and includes a driver.
At this point, both Iomega and Microsoft have blown me off, ceasing to
answer further email help requests. (Iomega just says call us, Microsoft
says prove its our fault first.) I am simply not able to be at this machine
during their calling support calling hours. And would prefer trying this
forum before I spend hours on hold during a day off. Anyone?

I have a zip 100 external scsi. At boot time the system hangs if the Zip
drive is powered on and has no disk in the drive. If it is not powered
on WinXP boots normally. If there is a disk in the drive and it is
powered on WinXP boots normally. I installed IomegaWare and that gave me
the icon for the drive in MyComputer but did not improve the boot
situation. Furthermore, it placed a program on the system which seemed
to cause problems so I uninstalled that and still have the icon in
MyComputer. I can't remember the name of the program, but activedisk or
something similar comes to mind.

I know that activedisk is indeed a piece of Iomega software. It's also a
piece of something else that I won't mention.

I have tried to boot WinXP with a zip disk installed in drive with no change
in behavior (WinXP still hangs before boot is complete at the desktop
without icons, taskbar, etc.)
A question: Did you install Ioware BEFORE connecting the Zip drive? I have
plumbed all about the Iomega website and cannot find any definitive answer
about this. Microsoft says that the drive should automatically be
recognized as "new" hardware at boot and doesn't need anything from Iomega.
I have had very bad experiences with Iomega software and really don't want
to install unless there is no other option. I don't need their little icon,
just a working drive.

Something is causing booting to hang and I have tried just about everything
little adjustment I can think of without effect.

Somewhere on the Iomega site I found a page regarding a "just drivers"
download, but it is only for the parallel port zip drive.

Thanks for you response.

run msconfig and try to disable anything Iomega in your startup.

Ran msconfig in "diagnostic mode" disabling everything "extra"
That is, boot with the minimum necessary. (I have no Iomega software
installed)
Without Zip drive connected WinXP boots fine (successful)
With Zip drive connected WinXP hangs at boot in the exact same way. (i.e.,
no change)

Have gone in and checked the event viewer in administrative tools.
whenever the Zip drive is connected there is a corresponding error message
regarding "aic78U21" device failure
This is the SCSI controller on the Adaptec card. Microsoft help and support
has no information about this error message.
This would lead me to suspect a problem with the SCSI controller. Yet, the
scanner and an internal CD-RW that I subsequently checked with both allow
WinXP to boot fine. (Scanner is external, CD-RW is internal temporarily
installed to check the controller. CD-RW on same cable, same connector,
works perfectly.)

Also, checked bios settings to insure that "removable media drives" are not
selected to boot. Several attempts with permutations of boot device order
without change.
Then took the whole damn assembly out, (Card, zip drive, CD-RW, and Scanner)
and installed in other machine running Win98SE. Works perfectly in that
machine... albeit very slow (7 yr old Pentium200)

I am indeed stumped. WinXP will not boot with this zip drive attached. What
'trick' am I missing?

Thank you for your reply

Looked at your references to drivers only on Iomega site and found same
as you. I assume your termination is correct. I can't think of anything
further. When I installed this drive under Win98 many years ago, it
wanted the F: drive and the CD-ROM on that drive letter had to be moved.
WinXP didn't seem to have that problem, but I moved things anyway just
for consistency.

I'm beginning to believe that would be giving Iomega too much credit

I have to believe that the termination is good because the exact set-up
functions in another machine. And to think that I am spending hours trying
to get this to work. Another ex-computer part paperweight for my
collection. No more Iomega, Perhaps it is time to go to Linux? At least the
software is free, mostly, and supported.

Good luck to you
thanks for your help

You should only need a properly installed SCSI card to run a Zip/SCSI.
This is definative.
Therefore, unless the card is some sort of old Iomega card (with XP
drivers), you positively do not need any Iomega software to get the drive to
work as a "Removable Disk".
Zip/SCSI are notorious for poor, poor (passive) Termination. Unless there is
no other option, never use a Zip/SCSI as the device providing Termination.
If this were me, I would try the drive from a DOS boot floppy using the 2930
card. I think GUEST has a driver for the 2930. Set the 2930 to "lowest
common denominator" settings as you describe (sync = off, lowest max
transfer rate available).
Since the drive works on another machine in W98, I suspect:
- XP issue
- driver issue with near obsolete SCSI cards (note that Adaptec has not
released any sort of updated XP driver for 2930 series).
- it will work in DOS

One more thought.
Control panel - System - System Restore tab - disable for Zip drive

It sounds like your SCSI BIOS is trying to control the Zip drive as a
fixed hard drive (your other post in this thread is also indicative of
this). Remove the Zip's SCSI ID from the SCSI BIOS scan, and your
problem should go away.

Using the URL you provided I configured my controller as follows:
- Sync Transfer Rate =5
- Initiate Wide Negotiation =No (When I selected no the Transfer Rate
dropped to 5 )
- Enable Disconnect =Yes
- Send Start Unit Command =No
- Enable Write Back Cache =N/C
- Bios Multip Lun Support =No
- Inlcuded in BIOS Scan =No

Boots with drive powered on and no disk in drive under XP.

Thanks for the help. I will now see what the effect is in WIN98 since I
have dual-boot for legacy stuff.
