I have an old system I built up from various components. Asus P2b-DS
motherboard win2kpro 768mbRAM. Iomegaware 4.0.2 is installed. Zip on
ATAPI works. I have a jaz 2gb internal drive and hp 12/24 gb dat on
the 50 pin scsi interface. Tape drive works fine. I have only got the
1 gig tapes my dad gave me with the drive (mac format). I am hoping to
use the system as printserver and backup for my home network. When I
insert a jaz Cartridge in the drive the Jaz drive whirs, blinks five
or six times fast, led goes solid and drive seems to be spinning up.
After eight or nine seconds the disk just ejects. I have no 2 gig
media to test , and am loathe to buy any until I know the unit works.
I have tried changing the scsi bios settings in pretty much every way
I could think to; turned scan device at boot on and off forced
asynchronous and 10 20 40 gb sec transfer modes. If anyone can help me
I would appreciate it.

As far as the SCSI configuration goes, you can find some tips at my
website: http://pw2.netcom.com/~deepone/zipjaz/scsi.html

IomegaWare 4.0.2 can be a problem. I would recommend uninstalling
that and trying version 3.1.1 instead. You can get that here...
ftp://ftp.iomega.com/english/ioware-w32-x86-311.exe

After installing IomegaWare, use the Uninstall Active Disk shortcut
under Start / Programs / Iomega. Then, go to Control Panel, and use
Add or Remove Programs to remove Iomega App Services. Getting rid of
those unnecessary components can save you some headaches.

I've never tried using a Mac-formatted disk on a PC, but unless there
is something wrong with the disk or the drive, I don't think the drive
itself should be ejecting it. It may be that some program is trying
to read the disk (perhaps one of those Iomega components I think
should be removed), and it's ejecting the disk because it can't read
it.

Backwards compatibility with the 1GB disks in the 2GB drive is a bit
spotty. It should be fine for reading (although you can't read them
while they're Mac formatted without special software), but writing
wouldn't be a good idea (at least, not on a regular basis). I'm not
sure whether you'll be able to reformat the 1GB disks in the 2GB
drive. If it requires a long format, then you won't be able to do
that; a short format may work though.

Thanks!! I downloaded the earlier version of iomega software, though I
have not tried it as yet. I had heard that about the short format only
being possible for the 1 gig disks. I had thought that the iomega
software might be the issue, simply because the only things in the
start menu folder are the uninstall program for active disk and the
help and update links. No app! I had tried to go to the iomega website
looking for the old jaztools and it is apparently no longer supported-
OR EVEN ARCHIVED-on the iomega website. If the drive works I can look
into purchasing more media. :-)
