I own an external Iomega 1 Gb Jaz drive linked to an old Mac Performa
630 with system 7. With one of the Jaz cartridge I encounter a problem
that I have seen before with Iomega Bernouilli cartridges.
When I insert the cartridge into the drive, nothing happens, the drive
tries unsuccessfully to access the data. The only way to stop that is
to interrupt by typing Ctrl+Command+Escape (the usual 'force quit'
command on the Mac, old Mac).
A blank window splashes on the screen (it looks like a COMMAND window).
And then, nothing.
Working a long time ago for an Apple distributor, I remember that tech
support for Iomega Bernouilli cartridges had the same kind of problem
and there was some Command to type into the window in order to stop and
terminate 'in a clean' way this never ending process. The problem is, I
can't remember what it is, 'Command Quit', Exit, or something else ?
I just can't remember. I checked all the documents I had. Nothing...
If someone can help me out with this or knows the magic way to help me
recover those data on the drive that would be great.
I thank you in advance for all the help you will be able to provide.
If one is working from the Command Prompt, the key combination
to stop an operation is Ctrl-Break.
And as for recovering data from the JAZ disk, use a different
JAZ drive if the cartridge fails to be mounted in the original
machine. If still unsuccessful, then a professional recovery
outfit should be contacted. BTW, most of us who have used JAZ
and ZIP routinely throughout the years have, for the most part,
also made secondary backups on to different media.
