Developing Nuclear Power As Alternative Energy

Many researchers believe that harnessing the power of the atom in
fission reactions is the most significant alternative energy resource
that we have, for the fact of the immense power that it can generate.
Nuclear power plants are very clean-burning and their efficiency is
rather staggering. Nuclear power is generated at 80% efficiency,
meaning that the energy produced by the fission reactions is almost
equal to the energy put into producing the fission reactions in the
first place. There is not a lot of waste material generated by nuclear
fission although, due to the fact that there is no such thing as
creating energy without also creating some measure of waste, there is
some.
The concerns of people such as environmentalists with regards to using
nuclear power as an alternative energy source center around this
waste, which is radioactive gases which have to be contained.
The radiation from these gases lasts for an extraordinarily long time,
so it can never be released once contained and stored. However, the
volume of this waste gas produced by the nuclear power plants is small
in comparison to how much NOx (nitrous oxide that is, air pollution)
is caused by one day's worth of rush-hour traffic in Los Angeles....

The amount of waste is "relatively" low. But the price of the
electricity sold by a Nuclear power plant does not come close to the
cost needed to safely store that waste for 10,000 years, or the cost
of decommissioning the plant when it is at end of life. Future
generations will be stuck with solving those problems.

supply and demand price will sky rocket just like Oil and Gas continue
to do.
I vote for putting more resources into wind, photovoltaic and
particularly thermal solar (the large mirrors focused on 1 point to
generate heat, steam and electricity). These are all continuing to
reduce in cost, and the thermal solar is very scalable, check out
100MW systems in use now.

I guess you never heard of a "breeder" reactor
A breeder reactor is a nuclear reactor that consumes fissile and fertile
material at the same time as it creates new fissile material. These
reactors were initially (1950s and 1960s) considered appealing due to
their superior fuel economy; a normal reactor can consume less than 1%
of the natural Uranium that begins the fuel cycle, whereas a breeder can
use much more with a once-through cycle and nearly all of it with
reprocessing.[clarify] Also, breeders can be designed to utilize
Thorium, which is more abundant than Uranium. Renewed interest is also
due to the dramatic reduction in waste they produce and especially
long-lived radioactive waste components.
Production of fissile material in a reactor occurs by neutron
irradiation of fertile material, particularly Uranium-238 and
Thorium-232. In a breeder reactor, these materials are deliberately
provided, either in the fuel or in a breeder blanket surrounding the
core, or most commonly in both. Production of fissile material takes
place to some extent in the fuel of all current commercial nuclear power
reactors. Towards the end of its life, a uranium (not MOX, just uranium)
PWR fuel element is producing more power from the fissioning of
plutonium than from the remaining Uranium-235. Historically, in order to
be called a breeder, a reactor must be specifically designed to create
more fissile material than it consumes.
